Quan Chi vs Shang Tsung

Shang Tsung I guess

He just takes a portion of Quan Chi's soul and copies him, gains access to his memories and uses his abilities wayyy better than Quan Chi. Plus Shang Tsung has the souls of hundreds or maybe thousands of martial artists so he's way better at CQC.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Quan Chi already kicked Shang Tsung's ass in the original timeline, no?

Even if that weren't a thing, Quan Chi has a far better actual track record when it comes to his fights in the old timeline, on top of being the main reason Shang Tsung stood a chance against Liu Kang when they fought and killed him. (The latter was getting his ass kicked until Quan Chi weakened him with a single Skull Fireball) He was doing much better than Shang in their fight with Raiden, and when it came to actual measures of power, Shang was only ever on his level when he had access to infinite souls to keep replenishing his strength with.

Logically and from an archetypal perspective, Shang should've been the more capable of the two. But that was never how he was portrayed. Even in the Armageddon intro (which isn't canon, mind you, since it's contradicted by everything that actually happened in the game's story), the only reason Shang Tsung came on top against Quan Chi was because he played dead while disguised as Ermac, then got up and rushed in once Quan Chi was distracted with finishing off Kenshi.

Yeah, he chokeholded him in the MK Deception intro. You are correct, ding ding ding!

True.

Actually, Shang Tsung was the last person you see in the MK9 intro, he was the one who reached the final steps of the pyramid where you fight Blaze.

@Kredory:

That was probably just Netherrealm arbitrarily referencing the MKA intro, tbh.

When we see him, both he and Undead Liu Kang are dead in the exact same place they were standing at the end of the MKA intro, which wouldn't make sense if Shang Tsung was actually the last person to make it to the top sans Raiden and Shao Kahn. He even has Liu Kang's hooks in him, and that's quite literally the only visible wound he sustained despite someone having to have killed them both at exactly the same time in order for them to have died in the exact spots they were standing in.

Not to mention, taking the events of the MKA intro as canon also means taking Shujinko being on the pyramid during the fight as being canon, which is impossible, since he was canonically imprisoned during the events of MKA.

Didn't Taven free him when they met in Shao Kahn's palace?
