I assumed the four Hokage weren't affected because their bodies consisted of White Zetsu, similar to how Yamato fell under the genjutsu once he came out of White Zets

It's tertiary canon
It can be used when there's existing showings in the primary canon
For example, if we see a blizzard in the manga and the novel tells us that the blizzard is AZ temperatures, it can be used
But there's no such thing like that in the manga (or anime)
It may be minor but it's a whole new ability from thin air
