No, monsterization can happen naturally but it needs the subject to have a very strong obsession or feeling (usually negative) towards something and it takes a while to happen, two examples are Crablante who ate too much crab and Personification of a Light Pull Cord who obsessed with shadow boxing his light pull cord so much he became a monster.

Orochi's cells just force the monsterization process.

In both cubari and Viz it states shaman Summon spirits to inhabit their costumes, and they're connected to the spirit world.
