i was imagining that them extending out normally (like is shown in the movie) was their regular function, but they actually explicitly exist to vent heat for when the limiters are removed and a newtype can use its full power... exactly like seabook did lol

Like the writer said: it's fine. Stressing about timelines and what's canon or not misses the point. Gundam is a "totem" if you think about it, with writers who have differing perspectives.
