Was Ironwood's base (which is in Atlas Academy, which is behind a large portion of the city) engulfed by the explosion radius though? It was affected by the shockwave, but that is different.

Also, why use airburst explosion instead of surface explosion?

Yes, the radius engulfed the base, as it was shown in Ironwoods' POV rapidly approaching before the camera changed to his reaction. As for airburst, it was used because the explosion took place in Monstra, who due to being so huge, has its "ground" way higher in the air relative to Atlas surface. That's why in order to calculate the explosion affecting Atlas, airburst was used instead.

Yeah I pretty much agree with this, given it was strong enough to make elm deaf for a while as she yelled out "what!?" After the blast that blasted all of them back (winter and the ace ops) despite being away from the fire ball of the explosion and yes the explosion takes place above the ground in the whale

It's like how a explosion leaves you deaf for a while even if you are away from the fire ball

It sounds like beams of light are what were approaching, similar to the beams of light that approached the city without damaging the buildings, and the beams of light that approached the Schnee mansion.

The explosion itself appears consistently dome-shaped. If it didn't reach Winter and the Ace-Ops, and it didn't destroy the skyscrapers, it doesn't make sense for it to reach all the way to Atlas Academy.

If the explosion took place at the upper 'floors' of Monstra, air burst would be reasonable, but if the epicenter is close to the bottom then the height would seem negligable for air burst.

I agree that they were affected by the shockwave, but when calculating the yield of the explosion we should use the radius of the fireball, not the range of the less intense shockwave that travels further.

Not really, the gif cuts short. Right when the green shockwave passes you see the radius rapidly approaching the window. Also not only was that portion of the Ace-Ops in slow motion and not real time, it still has them being engulfed by it in those pics, specifically the last one you posted.

As for the explosion yield, the first pic shows how large Monstra is in comparison to those on the ground, while the concept art shows the landing pads firmly in the middle on its side. As such, I believe that height difference was reasonable enough to use airburst.

So you are saying that Ironwood's bomb (which explodes if dropped from a plane) tanked the force of an explosion that tore through Monstra?

Is what reached Ironwood the radius of the blast/fireball, or merely light + weak shockwaves unable to destroy buildings? Is there evidence it is the former and not the later?

The buildings near Monstra's corpse appear fine by the way. The blast needs to tear through dozens if not hundreds of large buildings to reach Atlas Academy, but we don't see such damage.

If that is scorching it doesn't extend to the urban area (still greenery between it and the buildings), and if the explosion reached all the way to Atlas Academy, the entire area between it and Atlas Academy should've been scorched.

If several calculations exist for the same feat, the started thread should be placed in our calc group forum and have the calc group members select which one that is more reliable.

One of the staff members here can move this thread if you wish.

To approximately illustrate the problem with the calc, it works on the assumption that the radius of the explosion reached all the way to the top office of Atlas Academy, which is a massive building sitting on top of a mountain.

This implies that the explosion radius would encompass most of the city, but we see no such widespread destruction. Furthermore, a volatile superbomb was being transported on the grass plain, but it was not damaged and remained unexploded.

The assumption that the explosion's radius extends to Atlas Academy (which is an unreasonable assumption) is based on a scene of blinding light reaching the Academy, but this confuses light with the explosion/fireball/blast itself.
We see blinding light covering different parts of the city without causing any visible damage to the buildings; there is wind/shockwave (massively weaker than the blast itself) merely pushing back flying Grimm and humans.

Can somebody link to all versions of the calculations for this feat please, so I can ask some calc group members to take a look at it?

SilentLyfe's version seems to be using a random image which doesn't even explain how they got 11275.86 meters for Monstra's size (it assumes 1 px is 46 meters but doesn't explain how or why, and they could have just scaled Monstra directly), while ShadowWhoWalks uses TheRustyOne measurements to calculate Monstra's size.

So I will go with ShadowWhoWalks' version.
