How thick would cloud cover need to be to completely bock out the sun?

Like the title says. How thick/dense would cloud cover need to be in order to completely block out the sun so that no light gets through?

And remember, this be fiction so if it would normally rain upon reaching that point, who cares.
 
Block out as some sort of eternal night?

It's probably a safe assumption to say that they are storm clouds at least, which would mean 12 km
