This thread is to settle the perpetual discussion of canon status of adaptations for the Dragon Ball franchise, once and for all:

  • Cano
    • Primary Cano
      • Dragon Ball (manga): The original phenomena and source material, created directly by Akira Toriyama, creator of the franchise.
      • Dragon Ball Super (anime): The new source material, under the direct supervision of Akira Toriyama.
    • Secondary Cano
      • Dragon Ball (anime): The anime adaptation of the first half of the manga, covering Goku's childhood and teenage.
      • Dragon Ball Kai (anime): The revised anime adaptation of the latter half of the manga, covering Goku's adulthood.
      • Dragon Ball Super (manga): Counterpart to the new source material, following pretty much the same storyline, although not under the direct supervision of Akira Toriyama.
    • Tertiary Cano
      • Dragon Ball Z (anime): The former anime adaptation of the latter half of the manga, covering Goku's adulthood. This has been relegated to Tertiary Canon status due to the existence of Dragon Ball Kai.
      • Dragon Ball guidebooks (pertaining to Primary and Secondary canon): The supportive guides, elaborating on the primary and secondary canon material, e.g. Daizenshuu
    • Non-Cano
      • Dragon Ball GT: The anime-only adaptation, covering Goku's adulthood and elder years. This is designated to Non-Canon status due to almost no involvement from Akira Toriyama.
      • Dragon Ball Movies: The Dragon Ball movies, covering various segments of Goku's life. This is designated to Non-Canon status due to no involvement from Akira Toriyama.
        • The movies Battle of Gods and Resurrection of F are also considered Non-Cano, despite direct involvement by Akira Toriyama, because they were ret-conned via Dragon Ball Super.
      • Dragon Ball Video Games: The video games of Dragon Ball, such as Shin Budokai. They are considered Non-Canon due to negligible involvement from Akira Toriyama.
        • This includes all Dragon Ball video games.
    • Not Accepted
      • Any other source/adaptation: Due to being extremely inconsistent, unreliable and likely inaccurate.
        • In particular, this includes supplementary/spin-off material of Non-Canon material, examples:
          • GT guidebooks
          • Movie character-based manga/novel
          • Video game guide
          • Etcetera
  • Guide-lines
