DCU General Discussion Thread

It’s just called Lanterns because there’s no green anywhere in this damn show. This is what we get for Gunn making the Tom KKKing cinematic universe.

I was not hyped by Lanterns, nor I am now. I don't think this teaser means the show its going to be bad, but it showed little to none content to differentiate itself from other shows like True Detective or Fargo. The lack of color of the suit that was shown is concerning, but it wouldn't make the series bad by itself. When the show comes out, I'm going to watch it pretty much without expectations.

Basically how I feel, I am hoping the show is enjoyable just as anyone else but I'm not going to cast stones at this trailer before we've seen more. Its pretty evident they are playing things close to their chest and hiding a lot of the big set pieces and use of the ring so we'll definitely have a lot more "green" as people are complaining about

Y’all got one teaser and are acting like the whole show is guaranteed to be ass now. Chill.
Brother, the entire point of these things is to give a glimpse at what the show is gonna be like. Turning the most colorful part of DC that has always been space focused into "brown, brown, and more brown" that takes place in a single town on Earth is the exact opposite of what Green Lantern is. Expecting the Green Lanterns to be bright green is literally the bare minimum and they couldn't even deliver on that.

But why? The ring is literally their entire power set. The bright green constructs and outfit are what they're known for. That's like if the teaser for Superman didn't show him flying and he was wearing the black suit instead. It just gives off the vibes that the showrunners are embarrassed to actually embrace the most base aspects of the source material.

From the leaks I’ve read (might not be legit but they focused on the whole sheriff drama which the trailer hinted at) they use their powers sparingly, but they’re there. Seeing the clash here between Gunn’s Guy and this True Detective copy vibe they’re going for will be interesting though.

That's too harsh isn't it? Tom King has a bad tendency to destructively deconstruct and character-assassinate perfectly good characters such as Wally West and Booster Gold, but I do think that he at least generally means well. He isn't remotely a Nazi. In fact, his recent Mouseman storyarc in Wonder Woman satirised Nazism. 🙏

He's not a Nazi but I can't see someone who ever worked for the CIA during the Iraq War to be a good person. Not to mention that his writing is legit dog shit. You ever notice how the books of his that get praised always tend to be either non canon or involve him writing a story where the MC doesn't act in character? He's like an even worse version of Bendis in that regard where he's coasted entirely off of one or two good stories and then proceeded to write garbage books that show that he doesn't care about prior characterization as evidenced by how awful his writing with books that aren't out of continuity are like his Batman run and his Wonder Woman run. It doesn't matter how "good" a story is if it requires you to completely dumpster an established characterization.

I agree about that he is terrible at faithful characterisation and storytelling tone, much like Bendis, and good point about the CIA. Millions died as a consequence of their falsified information about WMDs. 🙏

I genuinely do not understand what Gunn was thinking putting the guy who wrote this page of Hal as an authority bootlicker to help write this show.

Ryan Reynolds's Green Lantern scared them so bad that WB shivers at the sight of color green.

This feels a whole lot like they already had a Reacher style buddy cop script, slapped some lantern elements on it and called it a day.

For a superpower based on imagination. I can't really say they imagined much.

Posting this here if anyone wants to continue it, as I don’t have the time to do so. It’s meant to be a more in-depth and detailed breakdown of canon to replace the explanation on the verse page. It also gives individual rules for each light canon project and how to scale to them.

Also, for the SS 2016 section, there’s two Threads posts from James Gunn that add onto the mention of Enchantress, but I wasn’t able to find them. One where he says something along the lines of “the mention only canonizes the character, not all of Suicide Squad” and another where he agrees with a post saying that you can infer that she still has her powers.
