It's implied that Yamamoto and base Aizen were close in power, which is why they both developed indirect strategies to defeat each other. Chrysalis Aizen was so far beyond all shinigami that they couldn't comprehend his reiatsu, and Dangai ichigo was so far beyond Transcendent Aizen that he couldn't comprehend Ichigo's reiatsu.
