Current standards for MTL

"Below is one possible English rendering that aims to preserve both the ritual/poetic style and the general meaning of the original. (Because some of the language is archaic, the translation balances literal fidelity with readability.)

---

One Two Three Four Five Six Seven Eight Nine Ten
Furube yura-yura to furube
(“Shake, sway gently, then shake.”)

Here, with the Heavenly Counting Song, as I raise the Totoro Kashi Utahi that evokes the soul’s enlivening, may you graciously hear and grant fortune.
Unto my body—should there be sickness or affliction—swiftly purge it, and protect me, solid and unchanging, eternally. Hear me, I humbly pray.

Lifting high the Eight Heavenly Flat Palms, I offer my reverent devotion:

Om Mariciye Svaha
Om Abhiyamaraichi Svaha

Demon-Binding — Invisibility, Samaya Form, Great Vajra Wheel.

Here do I place my trust; may this endeavor be fulfilled.

— Tai (Great) · Kyoku (Ultimate) —

Divine Spell, Divine Power — Red Tower Mirage Dream, Marishiten"
huh, did much better than I expected.

There’s a few slight errors in rendering,though

Maybe something like this can be added to the rules?
I think this works very well and should be followed. Granted, official translations CAN be wrong too depending how far off it is from the original source language in question like JP or CN. If someone CAN provide an OG source to compare the OTL (Official TL) with a Fan TL that is reliable and very close if not accurate to OG source, then that should be preferred.

MTL, even if it was humanly edited, is obviously prone to errors as Garr put it. That's how Maou Gakuin got severely nuked. It's how Fortissimo got nuked. Hell, that's how Rakudai Kishi got nuked so I agree with what they proposed. This way, it gives (potentially) less headaches in people having to be plagued with "OP is using MTL" comments or whatnot that I'm seeing even now with.

MTL assures a certain degree of accuracy because it never lies, but it is not programmed to follow fundamental rules of the Japanese language. Anything foreign to Japanese people, including food, places, names and languages, will be written in Katakana. Kanji can handle some of them, but not everything.
This is an N5-level unspoken rule. We Japanese don't use Alphabet and is too difficult for us to pronounce. That's why we use Katakana for foreign things instead. There is one exception. That is the title like king or queen, kinda sorta will be written in Kanji. But King from OPM is used as a name, not as the title. That's why he is written in Katakana.
And MTL are not programmed to distinguish above. Fan translations would be better if they knew this.

@marosuke

Two questions:

What is your exactly worded VS Battles Wiki account username? Your usernames there and here need to be identical.

Also, if you can speak Japanese fluently, would you be interested in continuously helping out our community as a translation helper? 🙏

M is uppercase on the wiki, Marosuke. But I'm marosuke on the forum.
Yeah, I can help. My native language is Japanese. But I'm struggling to write English fluently. It takes me lots of time.

Thank you. I have slightly adjusted your username here in our forum accordingly. 🙏

Thank you. I will ask our current translation helpers about the issue. 🙏

What do you think about the reliability for the most advanced publicly available artificial intelligence versions for MTL, such as ChatGPT's "o1" version? 🙏
I haven't tested them personally, but the latest thing I've heard is that they're fine to get the gist of things, but still run into a variety of small errors which end up relevant for the type of precise fact-finding we do here. Especially when operating on book-length scales.

If you're using MTLs, which have a bad habit of messing up the text due to either skipping entire lines or changing it, especially when you're translating large amounts of text, you're adding too much work for something that would need to be verified by a reliable translator in the end. So MTLs shouldn't be used and preferably, an actual translator should verify the text.

Yes. Agreed.

Is somebody willing to add Planck69's text to our rules please? 🙏

I do believe that ChatGPT's translations are better than other machine translation tools. I've read an entire series through it and it didn't feel much different than OTL. However, for the sake of accuracy and consistency, especially for Tier 1 and above content, it’s preferable to have these translations to be done by or checked by wiki forums Translator. Though I think it should be fine to use for less complicated stuff.

Personally, the artificial intelligence has improved a lot over time, I mean, I don't see a problem in using it as long as you have the raw Japanese text.

It's common for MTLs to not know the different between singular and plural words. Also, it's common for words containing negatives to have the "Negative words or suffixes" removed and end up saying the opposite of the correct translation.

Thank you for helping out. 🙏

Should we close this thread then?

Sure. Done.
