During her time on the Ultimates, it was explicitly noted that her 'base' form as Monica Rambeau was essentially a hard-light construct, and that when she shed it to activate her powers, she was in many ways powering down.

In short, she doesn't do it often, unless you count changing her light-form... or the fact that she may not technically be 'human' at all, and her human form is just an extremely sophisticated hard-light construct.
