That does make it notably more impressive, but the dialogue still suggests he died because of the feat itself, whereas I don't doubt he could have recovered, otherwise. Though, of course, I assume that doing that would not have left enough over to perform this feat.

Read the bolded explanation about how it works. Putting the Infant on the Core of Coruscant is more to secure an ideal detonation.
The Chain Reaction is more to release the power there contained, not to generate the explosion itself.
