Devil May Cry Discussion Thread

Didnt think the Death Battle would be behind the complaint from them
Hard to say. It was their show, Yang was their character, a character from pretty much their only valuable IP no less, verdict was overwhelmingly unpopular and called out for those reasons, so it's not that hard to believe it could play a part.

Yeah but unironically you can beat whole game with js gun spam without dodging

@Tony_di_bugalu would say it is js Ebony and Ivory too OP

I would say it is lazy gameplay
DMC 2 implemented a ton of cool ideas that eventually became everything we love about DMC3

It's not lazy gameplay, its a rushed as hell development that ended like this otherwise we would have DMC3 levels of gameplay in DMC2 and DMC4 levels of gameplay in DMC3.

Missed opportunity from Adi to not make a meme referencing his own show, with the line he just made.

DMC2 plays way worse than DmC, but the latter was aggressively unpleasant in presentation and writing, which is worse than being undercooked yet earnest. The former, while lacking much of an actual game to attach it to, is more likeable for how atmospheric and trippy its unfinishedness gets, such as suddenly going to an ocean oil rig and then leaving it via motorcycle ride on a highway, the warped levels or even the abandoned streets and art-deco high-rises before them, and start-to-finish one of the best OSTs ever. DmC vs DMC2 is an instance of something more "polished" and "complete" still ending up in obnoxious taste vs something embarrassingly rushed still being a well-meaning curiosity.

Incidentally, anyone here play any of those DMC2 mods? I hear they tighten up the gameplay on the player's end, but you'd have to extensively revamp the passive enemy design, too. Some lost souls keep trying to fix the likes of Aliens: Colonial Marines, so with that Capcom source-code leak to help, maybe someone will throw some more dev hours in the hole and make DMC2 halfway decent to play.

I wanna try that DMC2 mod ngl. Maybe sometimes later.

I gather that the way to go would be that "Definitive Edition" mod & maybe turn on that mutator that makes it like that one modifier in DmC: Definitive Edition where you have to be S-ranking a combo in order to kill the (otherwise still hapless here even with damage boosts) enemies, for the encounters that don't necessitate guns like that trippy floating heads fight or the goofy helicopters.

DMC 1 is too good, just the fact that I unleash a dragon on Mundus and the fight takes place in the universe makes me happy. I hate DMC2, it's the worst game I've ever played in my life, it's only not worse because there's DMC 4 to help make it even more awful.

While appealing to authority to vindicate a bad-taste product (and spinning this as some sort of Great Truth to lord over sensible objectors) is far more ridiculous, don't let the Shankar kultur-terror get you down, either. I mean, yeah, it's lowering the bar -- yes, many do become "fans" (increasingly wretched term) of something for the wrong reasons and make parts of it worse -- but they're not killing your family or whatever. Can just say their taste sucks and move on without re-preaching to the choir to the point of feeling too bummed out.

Although it is strange how little like DMC is out there right now, so I can see the preciousness. Yeah, flashy combo-string animations are fairly common, but even Japan -- whose AAA industry right now is not nearly as sharp as people quicker to bash bad Western AAA would like to admit -- isn't putting out a lot of great action games these days. Ones with solid fundamental design, not just particle effects and target practice. Platinum's Ninja Gaiden 4 did not carry Itagaki's torch (or their own!) well due to all the cooldowns and suck-to-target (talking Nu-GoW bad) and many more flaws, for example. It really shouldn't be the case that one has to revisit and defend the design principles of just like a dozen games (the good DMCs & Tecmos & Platinums & etc) from years back in a subgenre with such a high ceiling for brilliance. [Haven't played Nioh yet, assuming that's more like Souls.]

But if it's any consolation, there are other distantly-adjacent action genres doing well now. Shmups are practically economic-depression-proof. Starting to see more good indie beat-em-ups such as Fight'N Rage pop up. As Star Fox & Contra drop the ball in their genres, Night Striker Gear & Neon Inferno raise the bar. For that matter, while it's more of a crowd-control twin-stick shooter, I was shocked by how mechanically rich that Madness Combat: Project Nexus video game on Steam turned out to be, feels as hectic-yet-tactical as the stylish animations. And there are still gems from the past being discovered, such as Urban Reign recently growing a cult following like God Hand eventually did. The indie character-action scene of today is a blind spot for me, though; any of you guys have recent recs from that sphere?

My highlights of recent has been Hi Fi Rush, not as technical but does music really good like DMC, and has a unique rhythm game aspect to it's movement & combat.

Ninja Gaiden 4 was good, but the imbalance of weapons/tech/dedicated playtime going to Yakumo wasn't my thing, it could've been if I like him more, but he is Nero lite, they needed to show his angst more. DLC did Ryu dirty with his weapon too. Game is more technical than the older ones, but I think that depth subtracts from it's identity, making it more like DMC.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, was great, it's a remake/remaster thingy. Not too different to NG2 on the 360.

Peak of Combat is releasing better units now, with expanded movesets, more akin to PoC 1.0. The wank is also getting to that stage too lol

Other than that, don't think I played any other Character action stuff of recent.

I look forward to The Last Ronin, Tides of Annihilation, Wolverine, Stellar Blade Rain & maybe Control Resonant. And mostly importantly more Peak of Combat. 😜
