Kingdom Hearts General Discussion Thread

Sora, Roxas, Xemnas, Data-Sora, Marluxia

- Sora's complexity as a character ironically comes from his simple and almost stereotypical shonen hero archetype, as he's the sole guy that starts off as normal and is placed in a ton of wacky scenarios that enable surreal things.

- Roxas's contrast with Sora complements his character arc in terms of finding his own identity and purpose, even if he's being constantly lied to, while I sometimes appreciate his character design and flavor more than Sora's, Sora ultimately is tied as part of the character depth given to other characters, which is why I still rank Sora higher.

- With Xemnas having developed his own identity (as in, a heart) separately from his full self like Roxas, Xemnas's death leaves me as kinda wishing for his redemption, as then it's not his fault anymore for him to be who he is, being left in a dilemma between earning his own being or being forgotten as just an alter-ego of Xehanort, so while justificable, it's also interestingly tragic.

- Data-Sora is a weirdly underrated character, as unlike other alter-ego characters that are explored in the series, he's perfectly fine with being a copy of someone else from the start, and in fact befriends some of the same characters as the real deal, this left an interesting impression to me, and I sure wish that he appeared a bit more in the series than just Coded.

- Marluxia is a funny mad lad, with his character arc as Lauriam in the age of fairytales highlighting some parts of his character that outline him as more than just a comically evil villain, instead having forgotten his desire for his now-gone sweet sister and presumably tries to reconnect with Elrena, in particular I like to remember the scene where he strangles Ventus, as given the age gap and the chibier art style, this just comes off like the Homer Simpson strangling Bart gag to me.

Sora, Sora.5, Sorathesis, Sorabot, crackhead

Niiiiice

My list changes every now and then, but right now,

Terra, Riku, Xemnas, Sora, Axel

Terra's a really tragic story looking at BBS, as all of the actions he takes are narratively framed in a "He keeps messing up and slipping to Darkness" sort of manner, but looking at it objectively it comes more across as a "He isn't fooled by Darkness so easily, Xehanort is just that potent at forcing it out of people" sort of situation. Terra is a really simple guy, he wants power, but he only seeks it to protect his friends, and even though he's constantly surrounded by Dark, evil characters, he tends to have them figured out sooner rather than later, and doesn't let them just sway his heart so easily. To be honest, out of any final boss, the BBS Terranort one has to be the most Tragic personally, especially because Terra's still fighting, too, and the sort of situational command where Terra and Aqua perform a trinity limit of sorts on the guardian has to be my favorite instance of telling a story through the gameplay out of anything.

Riku is somewhat of a similar character to Terra in concept, but in practice they're pretty different. Terra was always firmly a enemy of the Darkness, even as it started to creep in, and even when he eventually had to rely on it, he still clearly preferred the Light. Terra didn't really need redemption, cause he was never a villain. Riku however, embraced the Darkness immediately and let it consume him, leading to him knowingly fighting Sora and Co, and purposefully letting Ansem take his body. All the tragedy thrusted on Terra, Riku allows on purpose- And after that his character is all about trying to redeem himself for it. It's a simple story of someone who doesn't feel they deserve a second chance, yet still being granted it. And seeing the pay off the stories of KH1 (Riku being evil) and COM (Riku struggling to come back to Light) culminating in KH2 (Sora and Riku, finally together again after so long) is one of the best arcs in the entire series for me.

Xemnas is a strange fellow, being a combination of Xehanort and Terra, as well as a nobody, I'm mostly interested in his psychology and trying to understand which aspects belong to who and what. For instance, he is both the type of person to cast aside every living person just for his goals, yet also to sit down and get sentimental over a old "friends" armor. Does this make him someone who values bonds, or someone who values tools?
It also adds another layer to him hiring Roxas, seeing as Roxas looks like Ventus, it might have pulled on whatever remains of Terra in the shell that is Xemnas.
His final KH3 scene is also pretty interesting. Personally, he's a villain through and through, but seeing even a bit of remorse is kinda cool.

Sora is Sora. I don't have as much to say as he's far less complicated imo, but being a supposed "dull ordinary boy" who also so happens to be the strongest out of his ability to make numerous strong bonds is just really wholesome. Sora is a wholesome kinda character, ig, and we spend so much time with him, it's hard not to love the series protag. He has his complexities too, but the simple nature of who he is appeals to me in a series with so many complicated stories and arc's.

Axel used to be my favorite character for the longest time, so him being on this list shouldn't be surprising. He has layers of humanity and cruelty, all in the same package, and is willing to go to any length to get what he wants. It's easy to boil him down to just "man he just cares bout his friends he's gotta be a good guy", but I find juxtaposing his warm, almost big-brother like nature in days to his near psychopathic actions in COM is far more interesting than most other characters. And of course, he can be genuinely funny while at it too.

Honorable mentions to Roxas, Marluxia, and Ansem SoD, their competition was just a bit too stiff.

1. The Master of Masters. I just love that archetype of the greater-scope villain who basically shaped the entire franchise for their own nefarious purpose that nobody is capable of understanding. Every time he's on screen, he has spectacular aura and charisma and manages to be funny, goofy, deep and terrifying at the same time. I love how easily he manipulates everyone with mere words and praises he knows they will take the wrong way and screw themselves over. Besides, we can tell he's a complex individual with deeper motives than just "Muwah haha" but the sheer apathy he displays at the consequences of his actions, which he is obviously aware of, makes him really creepy and unhinged.

2. Maleficent. Okay, this is fanboyism at its best since she's already my favorite Disney villain and she doesn't do much after II. Regardless, I love her in the games. Beyond her absolutely awesome voice acting that easily gets near the original, I love that she's still given some major importance even after the first game. She plays a big role in the Wayfinder Trio downfall by forcing Terra to steal Aurora's heart (which further fueled his guilt and desire to be stronger and thus fall more easily into Xehanort's clutches) and feeding lies to his friends about how he did 100% willingly, her preying on Riku kickstarts his character arc for the rest of the setting and she manages to be a thorn (lol) in more influential and important characters thanks to her manipulations and actions, even becoming an important asset in bringing down Organization XIII and forcing Xigbar to take some measure to hide the Black Box. Even after being relegated to the background, she maintains a certain aura of dread. I also love that she absolutely, utterly refuses to stay down despite all the setbacks she goes through. The sheer determination alone makes her impressive. The fact that she literally comes back from the dead in ways that should otherwise impossible by the setting's very specific rules only makes it more awesome. Besides, her boss fights are always awesome (my favorite are in BBS, especially the witch form) and even after II she proves she's still an extremely powerful and dangerous combattant no one should take lightly (hi Lauriam). And of course, the fact that she's a villain who openly admits she's evil and her motives boils down to "I want power, I'm evil and I like it", which I generally prefer over tragic and well-intentioned extremist antagonists.

3. Hades. Already one of my favorite Disney villains, I love him in the series for being both very funny and menacing at the same time. I find it awesome that, as the God of the Dead, he's basically unkillable even by the Keyblade. James Woods is of course unmatched in awesomeness, delivering a stellar performance that nothing can compare to and giving tons of excellent lines and moments. Needless to say, I'm extremely happy he's heavily implied to be in IV, especially if they give him a greater role in the general story of the setting. And let's face it, he has some of the best moments in the whole saga and the symbolism about him being the first villain to be defeated in III foreshadowing Xehanort's own demise is very well-thought.

4. Terra. I love everything about him. His struggle with his own doubts and guilt, his determination to protect his friends at all costs, the sheer power he possesses which even Xehanort recognizes. Contrary to what people like to claim and mock him for (hi reddit), he doesn't outright fall for the villains, except Maleficent and Hook, he always follow his own instinct and even uses some of them to get what he wants like with Queen Grimhilde. I really wish people stopped this because it's just infuriating in how wrong it is. His theme, designs and voice acting are extremely good and his fate makes him the most tragic character in the entire story for me but also serves to emphasize his absurd determination and willpower and how much of a badass he really is. I mean, the dude lost his body and animated his own armor to kick Xehanort's ass while he was technically at his prime out of sheer rage. This is absolutely awesome. And his return in III is simply the best of the "reunion" scenes for me. I just shrugged and said "That's cool" when Roxas and Xion came back but the moment Terra overcame Terranort and the Wayfinder Trio was reunited? I was outright cheering and yelled "YES!!!". I really hope he will appear more and get further development because he definitely deserves it. And let's be honest, Rage Awakening. Nuff said. Terra is easily one of the best characters in the story for me, above many others.

5. King Mickey. Most badass version of Mickey Mouse ever. His design is cool, his keyblades are visually stunning and his relationship with Riku is very interesting. I also love that despite being, well, Mickey Mouse, he's not some flawless, infallible figure. He has flaws and limits, sometimes outright fails even after a decade of experience and is not above needing help in his fights. His powerset based on light is also very cool in its versality (cutscenes alone give a lot of cool abilities) and I love the detail that he's very skilled at spellcasting due to having been taught by Yen Sid and I'm very glad Remind gave him the time to shine in his "Take down all the vessels by himself" scene while on the brink of death. The fact that he still has some clumsy moments also helps to keep in mind he's still the goofy Mickey Mouse we all know and love and is a grounded character with his own layers of personality.

Honorable mentions:

- Data-Sora: A particular case since he's very underrated as far as other selves go but I find him very interesting due to knowing he's a copy and having zero problem with it. I find it extremely interesting. Honestly? I like him more than mainline Sora or Roxas. Granted, I'm one of the only fans of the series who thinks Sora is meh good at best and Roxas isn't that much fascinating beyond his concept but still.

- Vanitas: Badass, menacing, extremely cool character and Keyblade design, very intense boss fights, awesome OSTs. However, the main reason I like him lies in his final scene in III. Namely, the moment where he rejects both Ventus and Sora's attempts to redeem him. The game makes it clear Vanitas could choose to redeem himself but he refuses. He is darkness (literally), he embraces it, he loves it. He doesn't have very deep motives or bigger reason, all he does is just him embracing the kind of monster he is and running with it. And it makes him all the more interesting when he basically states to Sora and Ventus's faces this actually makes him important to them, as he's effectively their shadow. My only grip is that he's relegated to a henchman in III and appears bit too late to truly shine among other villains.

- Aqua: Best female character in the series by far for me. Her design is very cool, her Keyblade to and as someone who loves sorcerer characters, I really enjoy her gameplay due to her emphasis on magic. She has personal stakes that made me very involved with her and her sacrifice at the end of BBS is one of my favorite moments in the series. 2.8 is actually one of my favorite games not only because it allows us to explore the realm of Darkness (and offers us some of the best OSTs, like The World Within and Forest of Thorns, and environments) but also because it further develops her character and her determination to keep going and fight the Darkness for the sake of her friends. And beating Terranort, aka, Xehanort at his absolute prime, in direct combat? Massively badass. A bit too bad BBS doesn't develop her as well as Terra and Ventus, particulary in regards to her judgmental side which isn't that much used in the story compared to her friends's flaws, and her vocal performance by Willa Holland is...shaky to say the least (she gets better later though).

- Terranort: Not really an excellent character since he's just there to be a jerk with immense raw power and does not have much of a personality aside from that but he works very well in that role. I just love his unhinged and over-the-top villainy (the vocal performance is excellent), dude is needlessly mean even compared to the other villains and is a MASSIVE powerhouse. And his boss fights, especially the one in the Final Episode, are some of the best in the series. Plus, he technically defeats Sora in Remind. That earns him a plus for me.

- Young Xehanort: YX is pretty interesting to me in that similary to Data-Sora, he's just an extension of someone else, a pawn even in his case, and doesn't mind his role. In fact, he even embraces it. For most of his appearances, he remains calm and collected which gives him a menacing yet almost robotic personality and I like that, among the main Xehanort trio, he remains purely evil and a jerk through and through. Bu tI think what I like the most is how they handle his powers over time in his boss fights. I like that he can alter time in so many versatile ways, it makes for an interesting antagonist without making him too overpowered.

- Xemnas: The best of the Xehanort variants for me. Spectaculary powerful, super cool design that perfectly blends Terra and Xehanort, I love his laser swords and his powerset based on the Void and his absolutely apathetic yet utterly cruel personality make him standing out. The man has a lot of charisma and menacing aura to spare and does it with delight and his boss fights are always awesome. Of course, there's his iconic, utterly spectacular final fights in II and his secret boss fight as the Unknown in I is a nightmare but still awesome and extremely creepy. His final scene in III adds interesting layers to his character as well. Also, Disappeared.

Forgot to mention something about Maleficent. The whole "Turning Santa Claus into a Heartless" plan. Let's be clear, this plan is evil to horrifying degrees when you think about it. Maleficent wanted to turn Santa Claus, an universally-loved bringer of joy and hope, in to a heart-devouring harbinger of despair that would grant her easy access to any world she likes and intended to send him on what would have essentially been a multiversal murder spree that no doubt would have resulted in countless innocent children of very low age to be corrupted and turned into monsters. Nevermind the sheer psychological horror that would have created. Take note this is the only time in II she turns up in person in a Disney world to aid the local villain. And she did all that simply because she finds Christmas Town ridiculous and hates how happy it is. This is pure evil at its finest. I love it.

Adding further honorable mentions:

- Merlin: First of all, because I love the character himself in the Sword and the Stone and its' awesome to see him play some secondary but still important role in the game, particulary through his training of Sora. Second, I like they keep his feisty and grumpy side to a degree, notably in his "magic versus technology" friendly rivalry with Cid. Finally, the fact this dude can casually travel through time however he wants despite the setting establishing very firm rules on how it is possible to do that is simply hilarious. The big bad of the story has to make up a super complex plan to get time travel to work and Merlin is just like "Rules are for punks" and does it his own way by completely ignoring the rules. Because F you, that's why. My only grip? No Archimedes around to show more of his grumpy side. Why SE, why?

- Jack Sparrow: For starters, he's Jack Sparrow (and the funny and kind of goofy but still extremely skilled, cunning and dangerous Jack from the original trilogy at that, not the pathetic drunk buffoon and the annoying parody of himself he became in the fifth movie). The Carribean is easily in my top 5 of the best worlds in the series and Jack's presence brings in lot in it (even after we learn it's not really him for most of the story). And then there's him taking down Luxord with his bad breath and stopping his attempt for parley with a finger and absolute authority. Now that is awesome.

- Davy Jones. Yes, he's just a random villain so we get none of his backstory and deeper motives. He's just a jerk with no complexity and relegated to a boss fight. But dear lord does he leave an impression. His boss fight is really good, especially thanks to mixing him with the Kraken and how he teleports across the Flying Dutchman. I also absolutely love that, in another very rare instance, the Keyblade's ability to ignore the rules of specific worlds and destroy supposedly immortal beings on its own because of this, like it did with Genie Jafar and Barbossa's crew, simply. Doesn't. Work. At all. Jones takes a beating that would have put almost any member of the True Organization XIII down for good and his only reaction is getting more annoyed. Seriously, nothing in the cutscene shows he's wounded in anyway, he's just repelled, gets even angrier and near-instantly resumes fighting. Jones's immortality is so powerful the Keyblade cannot ignore it. The one other major instance of this is Hades, a literal god, whom the Keyblade cannot destroy completely. And of course, there's him stabbing Will and Sora's reaction. Jones outright stabbing Will Turner in the chest, mostly on-screen, elicits the most visceral, dramatic response that Sora has ever had to a Disney Villain, let alone Donald and Goofy, or even a villain to begin with (heck, even Xehanort doesn't get that reaction). The trio outright forgo their weapons and physically assault him, Sora even punching him in the head. This is more than iconic, it makes him stand out in a pretty dark manner in an otherwise pretty light-hearted world. Not to mention the consequences of his actions play a part inspiring Sora to embark on his own self-sacrificial odyssey in the post-game (at least that's how I see it).

Last but not least about Maleficent, the scene with Pandora's box in III is hilarious to me as a Greek mythology fan. She takes one look at it and immediately orders Pete to leave it. And the scene makes it clear she knows it's NOT a good idea to mess with it. No need in drawing that much unneeded trouble.

Come to think of it, the ways to reach other worlds includes

  • Gummi Ship's
  • Keyblade Glider's
  • Corridor's of Darkness
  • The Star Shard
  • Whatever the heck Beast chose to do

And

- Santa Claus's sleigh

That's a pretty funny list tbh

Funnily enough in the Hercules animated series it's shown to merely be a lunch box.

Dream Eaters owned by Sora or Riku have no relation to the ones in the Union X era, they're made from scratch using materials from defeated Nightmare Dream Eaters, and we don't really know if Nightmare Dream Eaters were originally Keyblade War participants as they start off as Spirit Dream Eaters, so it'd be an assumption to claim otherwise.
Sorry for the response gap.

The page does have what I was saying, so the topic is over, just wanted to clear this up. I was not talking about any Union lore, but comparing DDD and III Dream Eaters to each other and saying Links should be similar in power.

Does anyone know which episode Sora is in after being wiped out? I guess he might have obtained NEP1 (Aspect Space-Time) from it.

Yeah my friend just asked me so I had no choice

It means that everyone that's currently Low 1-C should be 1-C instead.

It means that everyone that's currently Low 1-C should be 1-C instead.
Mind check this?

Now that I have the time I'll go ahead and update Sora's profile as he's the main resource used for scaling these days, most other profiles really just have scaling leading to him after all.

I actually made a spreadsheet a while ago that went over all of the in game boss resistances, which I shared with some of the verse supporters on discord
But if you want to focus on Stop layers

BBS Hades is immune to Aqua's Stop Spell's
KH1 Sora affects him
Re:COM Sora can't affect him with normal stop but Lethal Frame works
Dragon Maleficent has the same exact situation as well
That alone grants Lethal Frame specifically 2 layer's

You can also get Mickey to scale above KH1 Sora's time stopping abilities (Ansem and Xemnas are immune in KH1, but in DDD Mickey Successfully stops them)

There's also some argument's to be made about other elements having layers or characters having layered resistance through this method, but admittedly it doesn't get too high I think. I also didn't account for generic enemies cause that would take infinitely more time.

hmm interesting. btw does sora's stop work on Riku in kh1? because if not xehanort's stopza worked on him in kh3 so that might also be something to consider

Riku isn't affected by Sora's Stop spells in KH1, bar funnily enough his Keyblade-less fight in Destiny Islands, not that Stop can be obtained that early on without hacking either way, this'd also align with the innate lore on Keyblades blocking magic-based time stop, so any Keyblade wielder affected by Stop junk can be used for further layers.

Xehanort's stop chain would look smth like this

Aqua's Stop (Baseline Stop)/Maleficent & Hades (BBS) (1 Layer of Resistance) < Sora's Stop (Affected KH1 Hades and Maleficent; 1 Layer)/ Riku (KH1) (2 Layer's of Resistance) < Xehanort (Affected Riku in KH3, 2 layers)/Re:COM Sora (Via Lethal Frame, affect's Riku Replica, who should be comparable to KH1 Riku: 2 Layer's)

There is a interesting thing to consider regarding fights like that DI Riku Fight (Less so the fight itself and more so fights where you lack certain elements in general), since all the games DO have data regarding interactions with elements, even if said elements cannot be obtained yet. Though ultimately it wouldn't feel very in line with canon to use such things imo, since you can never legitimately observe these affinities in game.

another day another state of play without kh4

that's totally fair, for me personally the boss fights of kh are one of my favorite's parts of the games and bbs boss design infuriates me which drops it down for me
Fair as well

Also, as a fellow Yu-Gi-Oh! fan, I love the pfp. Been rewatching the animes recently (Duel Monsters is my favorite) and I'm up to 5Ds right now. Much better than what I expected

Anyway, I won't lie when I say the lack of news is starting to give me serious "We're thinking about completely altering what we wanted to do at first reshoot-like/There is a chance the game might get scrapped" vibes
