Sonic General Discussion Zone Act 1: New Frontiers

Wow thread is being very active today. Anyways ages aren't canon and in the realm of fanfiction you can make characters whatever age you want because they aren't real. That's my take.

I hate the term Mobians still, btw. People STILL believe Game Sonic's world is called Mobius.

Reminds me that I headcanon Shadow as just Grey-Ace since he probably doesn't think about relationships until he meets that special someone that makes him feel nice. Can imagine him being a little dense, despite how intelligent he seems. At least in terms of a relationship or romance. It just isn't something he has experience in, but not out of a loathing of it.

I dont even want Sonic to date Amy either. I kinda prefer Sonic not being interested.

All this canon talk is bit funny. Sega probably still wants them to be ageless mascots who will barely grow as characters either way lol

Ah thank you! I appreciate the kind words really. I like to think that "human" and "terran" could've been interchangeable terms used for the living beings on Earth and stuff, a long time ago, but societies and cultures developed over time to associate the former with the skin having finger users, and the latter with the anthro characters.

They like hinting at interest with Frontiers and stuff (especially Twitter Takeovers) but it'll probably never go beyond that.

  • Reason: I mean, besides the obvious? I like the idea of Amy and Sonic being a nomadic power couple. It allows for Sonic to remain Sonic (unlike the heinous King Sonic idea), and unironically let's Amy do that weird "spread love around the world" while not making it seem out-of-nowhere and forced like in Frontiers.
    • Honorable Mention: Knuckles x Rouge.

Least favorite ship: Big x Shadow
  • Reason: I just cannot take this premise seriously in literally ANY way. From what I gather it's just "small meanie, big softie" with no connections beyond "They spoke this one time lol"
    • (Dis)Honorable Mention: Anything pairing adults/teenagers with children (because duh). Sonic x Tails is particularly disgusting to me.

But yeah, it's interesting thinking about the characters, their ages and growth, and their relationships. Sega and or Sonic Team seem scared to commit to the world, I think. They show time passing through birthdays, aging, and Seasons, but don'tworryguystimehasn'tpassed. They accept showing a gradient of a pride flag behind Tangle and Whisper, but then look around for something to blame as if they're a child when asked "will you let them be together then?". To me it feels like Sega and or Sonic Team wants the characters to both be ageless, bloodless, worldless mascot PNGs for marketing purposes and collabs, and characters that have a world, a finite time to breathe, and emotions. In aiming their car for both, they just crash into the lamppost instead of heading down either road. And because characters can only ever develop as far as their concept pitch goes (with the game characters not developing literally at all whatsoever), the flame goes out quick when you're too afraid to let a world be a world instead of a fisherprice play set ages 2 through All where toys remain untouched by any hands.

On the topic of Tangle and Whisper as characters, I would like to get to know them better. I also want their care for one another to be explored, if that's what writers would want to do. I just hope the brace around the neck of the creatives can be loosened a bit to allow for that to happen, since doing anything against a company's wishes means losing your job in the first place.
It's always integral, but especially now when companies, governments, influencers are trying everything they can to promote bigotry, allowing powerful franchises to actually represent people and ideas, and not just exist as happy meal toys, is important. So for that reason too, I'm hoping Sega will let these characters exist and grow, since now is not the time for suppression of expression.

This is most likely because Sega didn't notice it was a pride flag because they're a bunch of middle aged japanese man out of touch with internet culture.

(ngl I can't see Sonic as an adult but that's just me)
 
I don't actively ship or pair characters together really, but for any Sonic ships I do like him and Jet together. Mainline Sonic isn't super competitive and doesn't seem bothered if something or someone is faster than him, but somehow Jet presses his buttons in ways that gets to him more than most other characters, and I think that leads to nice interactions between the two.
 
Just thought of something. If Bayonetta gets added to CrossWorlds, I wonder how that could affect both cosmologies. On a slight side note, Bayonetta 2 has various Nintendo costumes and weapons, and the game seems to talk about these things like they're canon(here). There's even a letter referencing Bayonetta's inclusion in Smash Bros as something that's happened, with Rodin saying to bring him along next time. He'd actually even end up being an Assist Trophy in Smash Ultimate later that year.


Accepting Literally All Of This would probably affect the Bayonetta and Sonic cosmologies a tad, I guess

Sonic was 15 and Amy was 12, that is 3 years, not 4

that is more or less the age difference between my mom and dad... so i don't see much of a problem cuz of my parents

A correction looks better when you're actually right.

No, several sources put Classic Sonic as 16. There ARE ones that put him at 15, but it was never a cap as various others still held the 16 figure even in old manuals. I can't believe you call yourself a SCHOLAR.
 
I feel bad for those working on it. I'm annoyed that SEGA or IDW didn't update people on this, but instead the writer and artist had to. I'm glad they can talk about it, but they shouldn't have to I think.
