Super Mario General Discussion Thread.

Should we include other functions for power-ups (like speed amp mushrooms) and things they've shown to grant resistances to (most star adjacent power-ups) on the profiles?

Kimda been wanting to try and gather up examples of this but for every invincibility option that's still a **** ton of games to go through to try and see what it can just no-sell. Because if we ain't gonna list invulnerability we can at least give it SOME sauce beyond a vague stat amp.

Best I can think of is the super star letting the user no sell attacks from giant Bowser, who should be at least twice as strong as his base form given games like BIS treat it as a bigger boost than his fury state which doubles the damage he deals.

I'm more so talking resistances, like how it just poofs fire attacks and Podoboos/Lava Bubbles, literally doesn't give a **** about Magikoopa spells (which are naturally transmutative), doesn't get paralyzed, electrocuted, shrunken, and ignores the item dropping ability of Lightning in Mario Kart (except for base game Wii U but let's not talk about that) and so on.

Ah I see. Off the top of my head:
  • Heat Resistance: Bowsers fire breath has no affect, podobos do nothing, but has a upper limit of since it can't protect against the heat of lava.
  • Maybe Transmutation: Like you mentioned the magikoopas spells don't do anything in games like SMW, but I'm pretty sure we currently treat their transmutation the same way we do as the Golden Flowers transmutation, as in it only works on blocks, would need to double check that.
  • Electricity / Size Manipulation: Like you mentioned the lightning from MK doesn't do anything with the sole exception of base 8 for the Wii U
  • Ice Manipulation: Ice Flower in Mario Kart World does nothing to racers using the star
Might be worth looking at Mario Kart Arcade GP since it's likely it also just ignores the effects of various items in that game which cause have dizziness inducement, transmutation, body puppetry, and a few other whacky status effects (Granted just finding footage of that will be hard, might need to emulate it and get footage that way).

You could MAYBE argue stars scale to red essence from SMRPG given the gimmick is just making the user "invincible" (Both also appear in the same game although the star can't be used in actual battles) which iirc also blocks out negative status effects like fear, death, sleep, null, and poison (Although there's a decent number of games where the star doesn't protect against poison). Kinda iffy on it myself but you can make an argument if you really try.

Can Boos steal an item if someone is under the effects of a star?

Would be difficult to know but could be really helpful.

At 4:50

Golden Tanooki protects against the petrification light. Fairly sure the Star should do the same, and a guide written up for the game says you can use a star to negate it so yeah.

Would Bowser instantly thawing out his golf course be worth calcing to get the heat of his fire breath? It even gets rid of the building sized chunks of ice in an instant, could be useful for potential heat resistance for Bowser himself (As well as a few others who can reliably handle his fire breath) since his baby self can withstand getting blasted by adult Bowsers fire breath and end up more annoyed than hurt by it.

Yeah, especially because it doesn't actually engulf the entire frozen area, which would buff it tremendously and it unthaws in a few frames.
Like, for reference, Link thawing the ice island in WW I got at like legit 6 digit kelvin (albeit that's a smaller flame compared to Koops, Koops thaws ways more shit), the only problem I see is that the fire directly touches te castle walls, so if that shit truly was like 100000 degrees+, it'd obviously melt that shit too but idk.

Yeah the castle walls could be an issue but I guess an argument could be made Bowser just only aimed for the ice somehow. lotta games show he's got such fine control over his fire breath that if he really wants to he can do shit like make his fireballs stop mid air.

Another issue could be if the heat for his course thaw gets too high it might have to be ignored anyway given his fire breath 99% of the time is treated as being noticably less hot than lava given the sheer amount of times Mario and others can handle it but die instantly in lava, or Bowser himself only being able to handle a lava dunk for a few seconds before his flesh melts off.

Not an option, 90% of the calc would be the fact the heat is so-and-so hot even off the fire (hence it melting ice it isn't even touching instantly), meaning heat exudes off it which is half of why it'd get so high.

Unless he can selectively choose what to effect, we can't just ignore stuff.

It'd be magnitudes hotter than lava I don't even gotta actually math it out I can just tell you straight up.
The only solution I can think of is if his castle is just real ******* tough and heat resistant? Like, I guess it would have to be given it's unphased and it's integrity isn't effected even when it's filled with molten lava directly touching the walls? While normal stone would obviously heat up and lose structural integrity?
If we work under that assumption and just ignore the fact the fire would liquify the castle walls too if it was normal based on past feats for it, it should be fine, but idk if we wanna be that generous.

AP is also well into tier 7 if anyone gives a shit about that, might be a decent bit feat.

That could potentially work as a way to excuse the walls not being affected, very consistent for direct contact with lava to do nothing to the castles walls, hell some games have the castle itself directly sitting in a lake of lava (Mario World, 3D Land, and I think Paper Jam are examples). Like you said dunno if we want to be that generous since the heat Bowser would need for this feat would be magnitudes higher than what the castles normally shown to handle.

Can never go wrong with tier 7 bit feats.

I think that like, it's a videogame world so little shit like castle walls not being melted should just be ignored because they clearly aren't trying to be scientifically accurate. This is the same series where blocks float in the air. Also yeah, they literally have lava inside some of these castles.

I say do the calc and see what happens regardless. At worst it can be a notable high-end for his flame breath

If that's the argument, why use science to calc it then based on the assumption it is scientifically accurate? Just ignore it and assume fire arbitrarily hot.

Something else I'm curious about.

In Mario Party's 5-7, there's Orbs and Capsules that summon regular enemies to do certain thing that benefit or harm players.

My question is: Since these are just regular joe enemies with no implications that they're gifted some special magic powers, could we not give the abilities shown to those species? Notably, Podoboos in Mario Party 5 completely burn up your items if they hit you and Mr. Blizzards destroy them.

Because this is fiction. We suspend disbelief for literally any other verse with wacky logic. Mario would have nothing but assumptions going off this logic you're using

No we don't, you're actively self sabotaging here, you can't use the wacky logic card and also want to calc shit using actual science, within the same feat no less. And if we're suspending disbelief to that degree, we're not calcing it,, end of, it's either realistic enough to apply sentence to and to calc it, or it isn't so we don't.
You don't pick and choose like that. You can't use a formula that relies on it actually acting a certain way, just to, in the same sentence go "oh but let's act like it doesn't because they don't intend that", yet still want to use the obtained value anyway.

Going through BIS stuff and it's truly ****** up how wrong Bowser is built, the Dark Star is forced to copy his DNA gradually instead of in one go because absorbing even the tinest bit of his genetic code stuns it and leaves it immobilised in pain for a little while each time it absorbs anything. Game explictly chalks it up to something only Bowser's body could do to the Dark Star, why did the storks build him like this?

I mean, at worst it might not be worth listing at all, Bowser isn't implied to be making his fire breath any hotter than it normally is. Or we could go the very funny route of it being a legit high end for his flame breaths temp but have it be extremely out of character for Bowser to use the full heat of his fire breath since he decides to just keep it lower than lava level heat every other time lol.

Oh, am I supposed to respond to this?
Islands don't have a definition limiting their size, but that was never an assumption in my calc. Besides the fact that Kong Island can be measured to be nowhere near Australia in size (its size is in a honestly fairly consistent ballpark, albeit a vague one), the temple is what the Moon is scaled in comparison to.
Doesn't provide source for island size. The moon is shown comparable in size to the entire island.
You can assume it's bigger, but you can't really prove that assumption and thus you can't really justify its usage compared to a more conservative end.
What if there are other feats I could use the higher end to support.
(By the way, if you somehow proved that the moon was genuinely moon-sized, there'd be reason to just consider the entire feat illegitimate: KE feats are considered invalid if the showcased level of destruction is not consistent with their calculated yield, and this impact very much does not cause 5-C or higher kinds of damage)
As opposed to how it is now? Is causing a volcanic eruption that sent it back into orbit not enough environmental destruction
Also would the moon being launched back into orbit yield a meaningful different result than sending it down, due to stuff like air resistance and gravity?

DKCR moon size debates in big 2025 what are we doing

@AStrangeverse I noticed you got a blog for a Dark Star / Dark Bowser rework. I've been going through the game myself and got some pretty decent hax you can add to it if you're still working on it.

Also speaking of BIS

Anyone have thoughts on what would we put this down as? Initally thought it'd be a straight resistance for Bowser but he's not really resisting his DNA being absorbed it's just that his DNA is ****** up or something and causes the Dark Star pain whenever it does absorb it. A situational form of Pain Manipulation maybe?

Also digged into the Shogakukan guide for Yoshi (The NES / GB puzzle game) and the lore is kinda wild.

It starts off with the extinction of the dinosaurs on an island due to a volcanic eruption, then tens of thousands of years later a star falls from the heavens and collides with a mountain that has several fragments of a fossilied dinosaur egg, imbuing them with energy and causing them to rejoin into a new powered up egg, and then Yoshi hatches from this new egg while the light of the falling stars imbues life into the fossils of all the dead dinosaurs and revives them, causing people to begin calling the island Dinosaur Land thanks to the dino population suddenly coming back.

It's really funny because none of that has anything to do with the actual game where Mario and Yoshi just put enemies like Goombas and Boos into eggs because, I dunno, they're bored.

How is that so bizarre yet so fitting for Mario?

why's the yoshi lore kinda ****** up

Once the planets align and the Cranky Kong CRT finally concludes I'm thinking of looking into at least changing the wording for the main casts heat resistance. atm their justifications word it so they can just no sell lava tempertures based on Mario Kart, but that's outnumbered by sheer amount of times lava is either instant death or at the very least causes them severe pain / damage upon contact with it. Hell Bowser himself has been reduced to bones twice from spending about 5 seconds dunked in lava.

by all means, shoot em my way
And to add onto his power mimicry he should also get DNA Absorption since that's the main method it uses to copy his genetic code.

I've found out about Bowser's most broken resistance, genuinely might make him untouchable to even outerversal characters. So in Mario Party 4 we all know about the Bowser Suit which makes the characters immune to slipping on banana peels explictly due to them having Bowser's traits. I know those henious downplayers will bring up "anti-feats" from Mario Kart BUT that's only his kart being affected by the banana peels not Bowser directly.

No but seriously my friend found his old gamecube and we played MP4 last night and I just thought this was way funnier than it actually is when it happened to him, like why does the game make it so Bowser specifically can not slip on bananas like everyone else it's so goofy.

lol

That reminds me... whatever happened to the Mario Kart profiles?
