In the Dragon Ball world, ki is not just physical energy, but a tangible form of spiritual power that forms the core of a fighter’s strength. Toriyama himself has explicitly stated that ki includes spiritual powers, establishing a foundational understanding of ki as more than just bodily force.

A concrete example of this is Yajirobe’s Iai-giri technique, which is said to sharpen his spirit, not his muscles or speed. Similarly, Mr. Popo uses the terms "spirit" and "ki" interchangeably when discussing training and strength, showing that they carry equivalent meaning.

Goku himself had to train and raise his spirit to become stronger. During his preparation for Namek, it’s stated that he increased both his physical and spiritual strength. This proves that growth in Dragon Ball is not limited to the body but includes the soul.

Another striking moment comes when Vegeta's spirit shakes the Earth. This wasn’t a mere ki explosion, but a demonstration of the Saiyan’s intense spiritual force, affecting the physical world. Cell’s ki is also directly referred to as spirit, affirming that ki represents the spiritual presence of living beings.

Goku’s ability to track others’ presence whether living or in Otherworld shows that he tries to sense spirits in the same way he tracks ki, Goku seems to imply sensing ki is sensing spirit. This is supported by the moment Dabura powers up his ki, where the narration says he is raising his spirit. The interchangeable use of "spirit" and "ki" is deliberate, reinforcing their unity within the power system.

In the battle against Dabura, Gohan unleashes a Kamehameha with his body and soul, depicting a full release of both physical and spiritual strength.

The Evil Containment Wave technique reinforces this connection. Kami borrowed Shen’s body by transferring his soul in order to seal Piccolo. When the technique was reversed, Kami had to release Shen’s body, and only his soul or spirit was sealed afterward. This demonstrates that ki-based techniques can directly affect the spirit. According to Daizenshuu 2, Evil Containment Wave targets the someone's ki. Even in Daizenshuu 4, Evil Containment Wave is categorized as a “variation of ki manipulation”, while Daizenshuu 7 classifies it as a “special technique”.

One of the clearest examples of this relationship is Spirit Bomb, which is formed from the life force and spirit of living beings including those in the Otherworld, where only souls exist. Goku receives ki from these disembodied beings, proving that souls can generate and transfer ki, further cementing that ki and spirit are fundamentally the same.

Ectoplasm Manipulation
In Chozenshuu 4 (page 155), the phrase "エクトプラズム状の気" directly translates to “Ki in an ectoplasmic state/form”. Here, the term “ki” is unambiguously referring to the core energy system of Dragon Ball a fusion of life force and spiritual power. Since Ki originates from the soul/spirit, the moment it is shaped into a ghost-like, visible form, it naturally qualifies as ectoplasm by definition. The suffix “状” (jō) means “form” or “state”, which does not dismiss the term “ectoplasm” as mere visual flair, but rather emphasizes that the ki itself is being shaped into a ghost-like ectoplasmic state.

Because the ki is spiritual energy shaped into a sentient form, it is consistent with how ectoplasm is traditionally defined, as an extension of the soul. Additionally, Gotenks himself refers to these entities as “obake”, a term that denotes ghosts or spirits. While this might seem comedic or stylistic at first, the use of “obake” alongside “ectoplasm” isn't coincidental.
“この気は自分で意思を持っており、またゴテンクスの命令に従って自由自在に動く。ゴテンクスは、この気をオバケと呼んでいた。”
"This Ki possesses a will of its own and moves completely in accordance with Gotenks' commands. Gotenks called this Ki a Ghost (obake)."
It reflects the nature of the attack a fusion of spiritual energy (ki) and spiritual medium (ectoplasm), drawing from the idea that ectoplasm is a visible substance produced by the spirit. Thus, because ki originates from the soul/spirit, and is described as taking on ectoplasmic form and function, Gotenks’ technique is unequivocally a form of ectoplasm manipulation.

Dragon Ball Super Manga
(Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga)

Pybara from Planet Yardrat explains that “spirit” is what Goku refers to as “ki". Vegeta learns Spirit Control and learned technique called Forced Spirit Fission, a technique that allows him to negates fusion and absorption. When fighting Moro, he uses this technique to release stolen energy. More importantly, Moro is stated to absorb souls, as confirmed by Merus. Goku hears the terrifying voices of the absorbed souls inside Moro, and Vegeta confirms that the energy was from “spirit or soul". Vegeta then returns those spirits to their rightful places, clearly demonstrating that ki can directly interact with souls. Pybara also calls this “spirit energy".

Non-Canon Materials
To round it out, we can look at non-canon material such as Episode of Bardock, Dead Zone Movie & GT Series. In Bardock’s case, ki and spirit are used interchangeably to describe his power. In Dead Zone, a technique created with ki is shown freezing souls, a direct visual demonstration of the link between spiritual energy and ki. Lastly, Hell Fighter 17 is an android powered by the power of Hell, a spiritual realm. The fact that the energy of the spirit world can be a source of physical power proves the total integration of ki and spiritual power in this universe. While not canon, these examples still support the consistent theme of spiritual power in the Dragon Ball universe.

SUMMARY
All of this through manga narration, official statements, techniques, and character dialogue leads to one strong conclusion: in Dragon Ball, ki and spirit are two names for the same essence. Physical and spiritual strength are not separate, but unified, forming the basis of the entire power system in the series.

The consistent overlap between "spirit," "soul," and "ki" throughout Dragon Ball supports the view that ki manipulation inherently involves the manipulation of the soul. Whether it's sensing, transferring, sealing, or absorbing energy, all of it points to soul manipulation being a core component of how ki operates in this universe. Additionally, when ki originating from the soul is shaped into visible, willful ectoplasmic forms like Gotenks’ ghosts, it constitutes a direct case of ectoplasm manipulation, reinforcing that ki control encompasses spiritual and ectoplasmic dimensions simultaneously.

Ki Manipulation included:
  • Soul Manipulation
Soul Manipulation is the ability to interact with one's soul or the souls of others. This ability ranges from being able to project the power of one's soul outward, grasping and ripping the souls of others out of their bodies, outright consuming souls to gain power, among other applications.
  • Ectoplasm Manipulation
The power to manipulate Ectoplasm/Ghostly Energy. Variation of Energy Manipulation. The user can create, shape, and manipulate an energy unique to spirits/ghosts.

The word used is 精神力 (seishin ryoku), which can translate as "spiritual powers", though not in the context of souls.

The word "spirit" used here is more closely related to the concept of "willpower" or "psyche" or "mental fortitude" than the soul. The three components Toriyama introduces—genki, yūki, and shōki—are derived from the mind and from the emotions; courage is mental, right-mindedness is mental, and the "energy" he speaks of is liveliness, or vigor, or enthusiasm; he even uses the contrast between a healthy, listless individual and a sickly, lively individual to illustrate the idea of genki.

Also, as per Daizenshuu 4, the official transliteration(?) of the word 気功技 (Kikōwaza, lit. "Energy Cultivation Technique") is "Mind Power Attack".
A concrete example of this is Yajirobe’s Iai-giri technique, which is said to sharpen his spirit, not his muscles or speed.
His seishin, yes. He gets serious, and he begins concentrating.
Mr. Popo did not use the term "Ki" in either scan. When he speaks of "spirit" (seishin), he speaks of (kokoro)—the mind.
And how does Goku sharpen his "spirit"? Via meditation.
The first scan establishes that to train one's spirit is to train one's mind, and the second further reaffirms the idea.
Where'd you find a Japanese Landmark scan, by the way?
As previously established, 気 is officially read as "mind", not "spirit"; the word 気力 is "mental strength".

  1. TV Anime Guide: Dragon Ball Z Son Goku Densetsu is a guidebook written for the DBZ TV anime, not the DBZ manga.
  2. The word 気合い is "kiai" (lit. fighting spirit). Like, the technique.
Cell’s ki is also directly referred to as spirit, affirming that ki represents the spiritual presence of living beings.
The word 邪悪な気 (jāku na ki) is "evil Ki". Why are you translating 気 as "spirit"? The word "spirit" is consistently written as 精神.
"I can't see Cell's spirit anywhere…"
Could you provide context? Even just a episode number would help.
気を高めていた means "raising his Ki".
King Yemma and his employees have bodies. Denizens of Hell have bodies. Denizens of Heaven, like Papoye, can have bodies. Souls are clouds.
King Yemma needed to give Vegeta's soul a body before he could return to Earth and fight.

They explain that they refer to Ki as "spirit" (スピリット, not 魂).
He was speaking figuratively ("In that sense…"). "[His] very energy is a mass of slaughtered souls" equals "He killed a lot of people to get his power".
Only the word "Ki" is used here.

The Dead Zone is an entirely different dimension. Garlic Jr. opens up the dimension by heightening his Ki, but the Dead Zone is not a Ki construct.

While I agree with some of your points, a handful are a matter of interpretation and context.
Like kokoro and seishin can have mental, and other such connotations, but it very well can have spiritual ones depending on context. It's not like it ONLY means that and can't be used when describing souls and spiritual energy. Honestly, I see it refer to spiritual stuff, or even a more unconventional "essence" type thing more often than not in most media tbh.

Null are you seriously saying moro's soul absorption isn't real, when it's stated many times that he LITERALLY absorbs souls? On your vegeta point, why would yemma send vegeta back without a body? That's incredibly stupid and it makes no sense at all, we already know that souls are comprised of ki because beings like buu reincarnated and kept that powerful ki in the form of uub. Raditz as a soul literally put up a fight in the afterlife against king yemma. Is every statement of moro absorbing souls just figurative language or hyperbolic to you? That has been accepted as soul manipulation, and its verbatim stated so there is nothing to argue about lmao. I guess vegeta was lying when he said he separates souls with his forced spirit fission. Posting the kanji does not prove you're right 100 percent, its context based, and in the context of all the statements, implications we have, and a core part of the moro saga, it quite literally does mean spirit/soul in the literal sense. There are also more examples I can pull up need be, but I'll just start with this.

He was speaking figuratively ("In that sense…"). "[His] very energy is a mass of slaughtered souls" equals "He killed a lot of people to get his power".
Are you serious? Literally the next scan you see is of Vegeta saying how he has liberated the souls that moro have stolen

so what meerus is saying here is literal that moro ki is made up of slaughtered souls there is no other interpretation here you are just twisting words to fit your interpretation while the given context straight up clarifies that moro has absorbed those souls.

To add, Ki has been officially defined a few times;
  1. "latent energy inside the body" (た体内の潜在エネルギー tainai no senzai enerugī)
  2. "Battle Power" (戦闘力 sentōryoku)
  3. "An individual's comprehensive power, including Battle Power, life force, etc." (see Imgur link)
  4. "energy or power hidden within the body" (からだの中にあるかくされたエネルギーというかパワー karada no naka ni aru kakusareta enerugī to iu ka pawā)
  5. "life energy hidden within a living being’s body" (生物の体内に秘められた生命のエネルギー seibutsu no tainai ni himerareta seimei no enerugī)
Raditz as a soul literally put up a fight in the afterlife against king yemma.
Souls are removed from their bodies, cleansed of its memories, and then reincarnated. Raditz was sent directly to Hell. As established, individuals banished to Hell keep their bodies; and, evidently, if Raditz could even challenge King Yemma, then he had to have kept his body.
beings like buu reincarnated and kept that powerful ki in the form of uub
Majin Buu's reincarnation is explicitly unnatural and was personally carried out by Yemma. The Grand Supreme Kai explicitly confirms that, when Kid Buu was destroyed, his own godly power was destroyed as well, meaning said power was specifically restored in the process of Buu's reincarnation.

Lol, lmao, even, yeah go ahead read the chapter then come back to me please. Raditz literally put up a fight in soul form against yemma, with goku actually being impressed because of how strong raditz was. Yemma said he went "straight to hell of course" in the context of just where he went, that there was no way he'd go anywhere else. You have zero proof that raditz fought yemma in his body, people retain their bodies in the afterlife on very specific circumstance, and this only actually includes frieza, why does raditz have to keep his body as well? Goku only got his through direct interference.

モロは星などの生命エネルギーを吸収してそれを自らの力に変えているんですですからやつのエナジーは殺された生命の集合体なのです・・・
Moro absorbs the life energy of planets and turns it into his own power. In that way, his energy is a collective mass of the lives he has killed…
In fact, Merus does not even use the word "soul". He uses 殺された生命 (korosareta seimei) or, literally, "killed lives".

Are you forgetting the part where the grand supreme kai literally sought out uub because his god power REINCARNATED along with him? This also proves the ki is tied to the soul lmao, even into the next life. Just because yemma granted goku's wish doesn't mean that ki doesn't reincarnate with the soul as latent untapped power. Its just a mechanic of the verse naturally.

Android 17 does not have Ki. Also, could you provide further context?
Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but apparently in GT writters made it so machine mutants/Androids had a ki signature. Characters could sense Super 17 a couple of times, Goku could even use teleportation a few times to hit Super 17 behind the back.

In fact, Merus does not even use the word "soul". He uses 殺された生命 (korosareta seimei) or, literally, "killed lives".
That still doesn't change the fact that moro ki has souls of his victims infact I rechecked the raw for the Vegeta scan

As we can see above Vegeta directly associates spirit with soul and life energy further reinforcing the fact that one's spirit is one's soul and life energy itself

I really agree with this, also in DBS anime episode 45 it is said spirit that is ki

Completely wrong??????

Vegeta questions why Copy Vegeta hesitated in attempting to absorb Trunks, and Potage then informs him that Copy Vegeta absorbed both all of his abilities and techniques and perfectly replicated his "spirit"/"mind" (精神 seishin), explaining why Copy Vegeta felt reluctance in the face of "his" son, before further explaining that Copy Vegeta's "heart" (心 kokoro) is controlled by Commeson and its evil intent.

Ki is never even brought up in the conversation.

Apologies if this is a little stupid, but I have a question: do Androids 17 and 18 have souls? If so, why do they lack Ki? Also, again, the "spirit" used in "Spirit Control" and the "spirit" directly synonymous with the mind and one's strength of will and concentration are different; the former is the transliteration of the English word—much like Super Saiyan God's use of goddo over kami—and the latter is seishin, which is a directly and openly esoteric concept.

1)Androids have nothing to do with this one they can be sole exception for this

2)What? Vegeta is directly talking about one's spirit/victims spirit he further adds how in other words it means life energy and soul what the hell is that point

Go make a CRT downgrade if you truly believe this

I remembered something

When Cell absorbs the ki of the people of a city and consequently kills them, it is possible to see the souls of these people surrounding his ki, although it's just from the anime as far as I know... it's very similar to moro, extremely similar

If this counts as ectoplasm manipulation, then so would every spiritual attack in fiction

This would also potentially give DB characters resistance to basic level soul manipulation.
What's the reason for resisting soul manipulation? Launching attacks made of spiritual energy doesn't mean you're directly hurting their spirit. If its because strong spiritual energy = soul resistance, then I agree
