However I don't see why a couple soul punches wouldn't do the trick since Gyutaro has no reason to be particularly wary and the stat gap isn't a one tap

The tiers for both characters are gonna change in a couple months most likely but for now, Yuji's got zero to put Gyutaro down, and he's far more skilled than him. Gyutaro's also faster.

However I don't see why a couple soul punches wouldn't do the trick since Gyutaro has no reason to be particularly wary and the stat gap isn't a one tap

Even a few would let Gyutaro realize what's happening and he'd start avoiding the punches more. He's more skilled than Yuji, so he should be able to dodge while also landing hits Yuji's gonna have to rct from and eventually tire himself or miss a vital part like we saw.

There's also the poison. Yuji has resistance, but we know the pain still effects him, Gyutaro's poison is potent to those who resist poison so I doubt it'll be irrelevant to weakening Yuji here.

ok but gyutaro needs multiple attacks to kill Yuji while a single soul punch might just kill gyutaro

Not at all. Battle spirit is quite literally their soul in KNY, Gyutaro's would be strong and Yuji's punches also don't kill people even when he targets with the soul, he just hurts them.
