Overall if the media messes up the Mario continuity (movie, manga, cartoon) or is not published by Nintendo then they're probably not part of the series. It's probably non-canon for both, possibly.

I think mario and sonic at the olympic games were published by both Sega and Nintendo, so this could really be considered a Canon for Mario LOL.

That, in the Mario verse, there is a cast of Sonic the Hedgehog characters that are 4-A and MFTL+ for competing against a cast of Mario characters in the Olympic Games.
