Wiki Project: Verse Tiers (Proposal)

Hello my fellow staff members. Ve and I have been talking for an many hours about a proposal he has. Here's what he wrote:

"I've been thinking about this for awhile now. Thinking about having another tiering system, one for verses instead of individual characters. Now of course this system will be exactly the same as the main Tiering System, but perhaps slightly altered for the verses."

The basis of Ven's proposal is that our verse pages, have lackluster "Power of this Verse" sections, most of them say something along the lines of "this verse is quite powerful" followed by an explanation of why. The problem with this is these descriptions may seemingly come off bias (i.e. one verse full of tier 7 would be called "weak" while another verse filled with Tier 7 would be called "strong").

This can simply can be changed and made unbiased by also categorizing verses by tier. Simply put: the most powerful character in the series would represent the tier of the entire series. So if Verse A has its strongest character be 2-C then Verse A is a Tier 2 verse.

The system Ven proposes is the same as our Tiering System, minus the "sub tiers" (A, B, and C). The reason of this is that all verses would cap at Tier 1. (So no High 1-A or 0 verses).

This is inspired by the Anime Characters Fight Wiki no less, which classifies its verses by tiers. Ven believes doing something similar for our wiki may be prove to be more beneficial than we currently realize. After reviewing over this myself, I have come up with the following "pros and cons".

Pros:

  • Organized classification for the verses on our wiki.
  • Will help out with organizing "verse/series vs matches" (we know indexing is our highest priority though)
  • Applies our tiers to verses themselves rather than just explaining them as beibg "powerful,, "very powerful", "weak", etc.
Cons:

  • Workload: There are 519 verses on this wiki, that means we have to implement this scale to hundreds of pages. Ven has said that he is more than happy and capable of doing as much as possible, but I know that his word alone may not be enough for everybody.
  • God tiers: If a verse has several Tier 9 characters and a few Tier 7 but just so happens to have a god tier that's High 3-A, should be we really tier the verse at High 3-A?
Let me know if you found any pros or cons and I will gladly add them. Ven also said you all are more than welcome to offer suggestions and improvements to this proposal (or reject it entirely) as it is just something we both have wanted to share with you.

This is a STAFF ONLY thread, please DO NOT reply to this thread if you are not a staff member! If you have any suggestions kindly post them of my wall.

You're right that the "Power of the Verse" sections are definitely lacking, and prone to bias. Although I'm not sure if this is feasible workload wise, it does have merit.

I know. It would be quite the work to do so much.

Starkiller215 has some input:

"Well one of the cons of doing this is purely the consistency of feats (and the verse itself) or if there are feats that are quite notable or not. Also I noticed that doing so will probably make things a bit stressful in the short term, but it might be helpful in the long run. Of course the pro/con is that we don't need to elaborate too much about the power of the verse if we use examples, links to a blog post that talk about the verse and how it works. Also notes will probably be helpful as well. I also wouldn't mind the proposal except one thing. Not all verse page has a lackluster "Power of the Verse" section. A good example will be the Gears of War that Colonel made and I expand on it, but I decide to explain on how it is powerful in its own way: Gears of War

Anyway the explanation on the "Power of the verse" section for other verses must not be too complicated and hard to understand as it must be simple, straight to the point, and clear on how it explain the power of the verse itself. Also another con is that it might be cluster the page itself if we need a lot of details for it."

Ehh seems like a lot of work for no reason. Especially since we don't accept battles with multiple characters, much less entire verses. Indexing wise, it would be too much work for something besides the point of the wiki, which is for individual characters.

My apologies, but although the proposition has merit, it would likely be too much work for too little profit at a sensitive juncture.

The Living Tribunal1 and Matthew Schroeder are planning different wiki revision projects, and I am planning another staff recruitment drive.

Also, I am uncertain if this could serve to further set fandoms of different series at each others throats, which is something that we have attempted to avoid.

I know. The workload for this is too much, though we can't ignore that some of our "Power of the Verse" sections are lackluster but I told Ven that we should treat it like our character profiles, some of them of lackluster, others are very well made, it's just something we both have to put effort to into fixing.

Well, maybe some better organisation might be an idea later, but for the moment it seems unwise.

Indeed. I let him know about your input. As always Ven was very open about it. "At least I tried!" as he said ^_^

Well, your willingness to help out is appreciated. We are just very busy at the moment, and I am uncertain if controlling the members' abilities to describe their favourite verses too much is a good idea. The verse pages usually mention the scale anyway. There isn't really much harm in if they describe a fiction as powerful, despite not being relatively powerful in comparison to other listed fictions.
