I am not sure where people are getting the ENIAC was "unplugged" part but that simply did not happen. The VR Tamers and their VR Digimon (which included some of the strongest Digimon then) just managed to infect and crash the DW program run by ENIAC. Host computers like ENIAC, Yggdrasil, Homeros run the Digital Worlds much like programs. If required, I can explain it in more detail.

On the topic of downplay, some more common Digimon downplay I've come across:

1. It's digital and virtual like the matrix, can't do it in real life.

2. Digimon cannot affect things in the real world.

3. If you shut down the internet, the Digimon all die/the Digimon multiverse collapses.

4. The Digital World is just a planet (I particularly enjoy debunking these)

5. Digimon is just unplugthecomputer level.

6. Mega level digimon are just tree busters.

Speaking of ENIAC, there's people claiming it's calculator level and has less processing power than a tamagotchi BASED on its real world counterpart which has been non-operational since the 80s. Despite the series clearly showing all origins of everything Digital originating (it is also the only host computer operating on base-10 decimal system), sealed Zeed gaining power over all worlds and networks just by taking down ENIAC and XW clearly stating that processing a single Digital world itself would require more resources than anything available in the human universe. Add to this that all these digital universes governed by ENIAC are infinitely branching and expanding...yeah, that downplay is ridiculous. It's like saying that since some of the the original heroes/famous personalities in Fate/SMT were just human and nothing special in real life, so their Fate/SMT feats are invalid.

There was a guy back then who said that Saint Seiya characters were 9-C, and Subsonic, that the Athena Exclamation was 7-C, and that Hades' 4-B feat took 200 years of prep time.

I was on Animevice, MvC and Narutoforums back on those days, pretty sure this guy was all going all around trying to "debunk the wank!!!". Got constantly banned but made multiple dupes.His main target was those big bang statements.

Speaking of which, there is a certain user I see doing similar things these days on multiple forums for Digimon (reddit, Comicvine, Spacebattles,even Withthewil). Claims to be a Digimon expert and a reliable source but constantly lies and purposefully misinterprets feats to suit his interpretation. People may have come across his many of his threads recently. Won't back down even when constantly proven wrong. Last I checked, he was trying to argue a Ditto could copy Galactus.

Can't really fault you, so little information was available on the games before Ajora fully translated them that people did spread a lot of information and misinformation and synopsis was the best we had. The profiles from these games are still untranslated though, many contain story related stuff like Mille creating Apocalymon.

Of course I wouldn't be able to know what has been downplayed the most. I'd perhaps say Dragon Ball since its immense popularity and notoriety in the VS community brings massive amounts of fanboys, haters and biased interpretations both wank and downplay. And I could go all day about the sheer ridiculousness I have heard when it comes to Dragon Ball downplaying.

But besides DB one of the more absurd examples off the top of my head was the plethora of YT commenters who unjokingly were saying a billion lions would take down all the Pokemon. (Yeah it's kind of a meme and most are shitposting, but many were actually legit arguing for the lions I saw)

@Ryu. The one I saw was "One Trillion Lions vs Pokemon". It wasn't too bad. It limited Legendary Pokemon, so the debate boiled down to mostly a stamina thing. Like sure Gyarados can nuke an entire city worth of lions, but can he do that non-stop? Even then, Pokemon have way to much advantages like AoE, flight, non-corpeality, elemental manipulations etc.

SAO gets downplayed a lot, "Kirito's weaker than a little girl, and he's the strongest in the series" is the argument I always see.

Most superhuman fps characters seem to get downplayed to subsonic and wall level, or lower since otherwise they wouldn't fear guns.

I can't count the number of times I've been told Pokémon has never surpassed mountain level.

@blah Suguha is training Kenod for years and is in full form. Kazuto just finished a rehabilation that helped him to walk again. So when someone says he is weaker than Suguha during that time is just saying the truth. Honestly I don't think he could win in real world against Suguha even know, considering his skill basically only in the game while she has the skill from the real world on her side.

A Tyranitar is so overwhelmingly powerful, it can bring down a whole mountain to make its nest. It roams in mountains seeking new opponents to fight.

The quakes caused when it walks make even great mountains crumble and change the surrounding terrain.

I mean most downplays are due to outliers (e.g. Goku dying to laser) and confusion over story setting and scaling (street level undyne).
