So, just wondering, since there is potentially interesting LS for a ln I'm reading.

1. What LS is it required to lift all of mainland Japan.
2. What LS is required to lift all of the atmosphere within Japan's borders?

1. What LS is it required to lift all of mainland Japan.
Standard way to calculate the mass of a landmass (country, island) is to get the area then multiply by the average elevation. Japan has an area of 377,973km^2, or 3.77973e11 m^2.
Japan has an average elevation of 438m.
Multiply those to get a volume of 1.65552174e14 m^3.
Continental crust has a density of about 2830kg/m^3.
Multiply those, final mass is 4.69e17 kg or Class P.

2. What LS is required to lift all of the atmosphere within Japan's borders?
Earth's atmosphere is 5.1480×10^18 kg. This is over the surface of the whole Earth, or 510072000 km^2..
Japan's area is 0.074% of Earth's, so it should have 0.074% the atmospheric mass.
3.81e15 kg, Class P but lower. Just a bit above baseline.

I see. Thank you! I was thinking about rating it to baseline Class P, so I'm glad I actually guessed the rating correctly.
