I'm attempting to rank the real world vehicles of all time by their maximum kinetic energy. I have performed some calculations already and this is what I have so far:
Gerald R Ford nuclear powered warship: KE = (1/2)(10^8)(15.6)^2 = 1.21 × 10^10 J (large building level, high 8-C)
Heaviest oil tanker - Seawise Giant: KE = (1/2)(6.47 × 10^8)(8.3)^2 = 2.2 × 10^10 J (large building level, high 8-C)
Heaviest freight train: KE = (1/2)(9×10^7)(7.6)^2 = 2.6 × 10^9 J (building level, 8-C)
Fastest freight train: KE = (1/2)(110000)(97.2)^2 = 5.2 × 10^8 J (small building level +, high 9-A)
Fastest train - Maglev: KE = (1/2)(33000)(139.2)^2 = 3.2 × 10^8 J (small building level, 9-A)
Current fastest car - Thrust SSC: KE = (1/2)(10500)(341)^2 = 6.1 × 10^8 J (small building level +, high 9-A)
Fastest car (unfinished - projected speed) - Bloodhound LSR: KE = (1/2)(7500)(469.3)^2 = 8.3 × 10^8 J (small building level +, high 9-A)
Fastest plane (unmanned) X-43A: KE = (1/2)(1400)(3128.6)^2 = 6.85 × 10^9 J (building level, 8-C)
Fastest plane (manned) X-15: KE = (1/2)(6620)(2020.2)^2 = 1.35 × 10^10 J (large building level, high 8-C)
NASA Parker Solar Probe: KE = (1/2)(685)(176389)^2 = 1.1 × 10^13 J (town level, 7-C)
Discover Space Shuttle: KE = (1/2)(73000)(7778)^2 = 2.2 × 10^12 J (multi-city block +, high 8-A)??? - I'm not sure what the weight is when the shuttle reaches maximum KE because weight changes when parts of rocket are ejected
Summary:
Car (high 9-A, 8.3 × 10^8 J)
Train (8-C, 2.6 × 10^9 J)
Plane (high 8-C, 1.35 × 10^10 J)
Ship (high 8-C, 2.2 × 10^10 J)
Space shuttle/ rocket (high 8-A?)
Space probe (7-C, 1.1 × 10^13 J)
