I think this was kinda answered in the manga.

1. 16 pretty much states that Vegeta as a SSJ is far stronger than ever before.



2. Trunks was shocked that Vegeta jumped to Super Vegeta off the bat instead of starting the fight out as Super Saiyan. Meaning Trunks seemed confident that his father's powered up Super Saiyan form was enough to take on Semi - Perfect Cell.



3. Trunks did it and he was roughly comparable to Vegeta.

I'm pretty sure Vegeta stomps now since after the training he became FAR stronger than before.
