the chronology of the grinch

so in how the grinch stole christmas, the grinch is very mean ):< but he learns the true meaning of christmas and becomes nice

however in later tv specials he is very mean again, which is strange considering that he was reformed earlier.

what's even stranger is that at the end of the grinch grinches the cat in the hat, the grinch is reformed again

the actions of max also suggest that halloween is grinch night is the end of the timeline, which is contradicted by the grinch's behavior

in release order, the timeline is as follows: the grinch is mean as hell and hates christmas, so with the help of his dog, max, he steals all of the presents in whoville. however, they are unfazed by the lack of gifts, and the grinch realizes the true meaning of christmas. his heart grows three sizes, and he redeems himself by bringing all of the gifts back. however, in the halloween movie, the grinch suddenly hates the whos again, and now the whos don't like the grinch either. the grinch attempts to go down and terrorize whoville, but his plan is thwarted. max leaves the grinch and stays in whoville. in the cat in the hat crossover, max is somehow back with the grinch, who is once again mean as hell. he's in a good mood at the start of the special, but the narrator mentions that this is extremely unusual for the grinch, and that max had never seen him this happy before. the grinch also lives in a house in this special, rather than the top of a mountain. after reminding himself of his evil nature, he engages in a fierce battle with the cat in the hat, who utterly crushes him via psychological warfare. thanks to the efforts of the cat in the hat, the grinch is reformed once again.

this timeline really doesn't make sense no matter what way you put it

so in what order did this happen? this is important because the grinch becomes 12x stronger in stole christmas, but that multiplier only applies to anything if the other specials took place before it

Are you talking about the animation shows? Wikipedia says that Halloween is a prequel to Grinch stole Christmas.

is there a citation for that? what about his crossover with the cat?
Looking back, I don't think these series are particulary related. The events of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and "Halloween is Grinch Night" don't make sense. Halloween is in October so it could be considered as a prequel but in the end his dog, Max, leaves him while that's not true for "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". Then again, considering it as a sequel also doesn't work with the events of "Christmas". So, its as you said. I think they should be taken separately for tiering purpose.

i mean it's possible that max returned to the grinch, or the grinch just took him back

also max pulled the grinch's sleigh 10,000 feet up a mountain, at least subsonic likely far higher max

Yes, but that's not supported canonically. Especially, since "Christmas" precedes "Halloween" by a decade and the whole Max thing is absent. The specials are indeed produced by different companies. So, I can only think of either just making different keys for the specials or just ignoring the ending or Halloween

do you think it's possible that the grinch just has a loose canon, like mario? i highly doubt dr. seuss was particularly focused on the grinch timeline lol

The specials are made in the 60s and 70s. I will say that they are loosely connected.
