I think it was the latter. Death Battle Mario has reactive evolution to always keep up with Sonic no matter what.

Don't forget creation equals destruction isn't the case in every verse no matter how much we want to pretend it is (especially when dealing with data stuff) there are alot of lenses to look at any fiction and when you take a step back and think about the stuff he believes it all lines up
