Sharingan Revision (Maybe?)

No, it's not the cause. The cause is his realization and the mind shifting information obito gave him.

Cause

nou

  1. 1.
a person or thing that gives rise to an action, phenomenon, or condition.

If Sasuke never knew the truth, he would've never been despaired so hard.

Even the statement where this belief of needing someone close to you to die comes from is partially unreliable because it comes from old Uchiha tradition where it was believed that "You need to kill a person close to you, in order to obtain MS.", but that's obviously not the case. It comes from the trauma and despair of losing someone close to you.

Which means, it comes from trauma/despair in general and not specifically from a person close to you dying.

Now, I'll finish my full response to LSir about his previous point later.

You are still needlessly arguing semantics. The root of the despair that made Sasuke awaken it was still his brother dying. All Obito did by providing that information is change Sasuke's perspective about the act. There's no despair for the realization with no Itachi dead, because then there's no last family, true family member that Sasuke just lost at his own hands.

It's, kinda not incorrect when literally every single time we see it happen is due to the death of someone. Call it Naruto leaning on it's nakama and bonds message, but that's still always been the case.
