Questions about light

So, say an attack is stated to be a beam of light, we take that as lightspeed right? But what if it turns a corner or bends or something? Is it still lightspeed but with a few funky properties?

If you have a scan where someone sends out a "beam of light" which then makes a curve around a corner to hit someone, will that be less legitimate than an exact copy of that scan where the dialogue is changed to a "beam of photons"?

EDIT:

What if it's stated to be light/photons but it comes out in packets rather than a beam?

If it turns a corner and bends without passing through another medium, I don't think it's a beam of light regardless of whether or not it's called one.

Photons are more concrete, but unless the user is stated to be able to manipulate photons and the electromagnetic spectrum (i.e. Accelerator or Magneto) I still don't think it counts.

Of course, I hate math and physics in general, so others are more qualified than me to comment on this.

If the lights bend without any valid reason, such as refraction (passing through another medium) or high gravity (neutron star, black hole, then I wouldn't consider it real light.

Even if it's stated to be photons, it's properties have been altered by outside intereference (magic or electromagnetic manipulation) so the C constant might have changed.
