Question about omniscience

Sorry to bother you with a question that might seem silly, but it's a genuine question I've been asking myself.

To give you some context, I was reading the Wikipedia page on the Akashic Records. For those unfamiliar with the concept, it's basically a universal memory where all events, thoughts, and emotions are recorded since the beginning of time. And given what I've just discussed, I wondered if this could be a suitable description for someone categorized as Omniscient ?

I reread the omniscience page, and it mentions that the character must have absolute knowledge of their universe, not just infinite, but knowledge of everything, so what I think is past, present and future.

However, when discussing this on Discord, I was told that omniscience was not a matter of past, present or future, but a matter of range.

To be sure, I preferred to ask the question here, so I can have the lives of more people.

Under VS Battles Wiki standards, simply having access to the Akashic Records does not automatically grant a character absolute Omniscience, though it heavily depends on how it is utilized and the verse's cosmology.

1. Omniscience vs. Information Access:
True Omniscience means the character inherently possesses all knowledge at all times, without needing to "look it up" or access an external database. Akashic Records function more like a cosmic library or database. If a character has to actively read or pull data from the Records, it is classified as Nigh-Omniscience or Cosmic Awareness, not absolute Omniscience.

2. The Matter of Range:
The person on Discord was partially correct. Omniscience on the wiki is restricted by scale. A character can be "Omniscient" within a single universe (Universal Omniscience) but completely ignorant about things happening in the wider Multiverse. If the Akashic Records only record the history of one specific universe, then the knowledge is limited to that universal scale.

So, to answer your question:
It usually qualifies for Nigh-Omniscience or Cosmic Awareness on a universal scale, unless the character is literally one with the Records and possesses all that infinite data simultaneously without any limitations.

Translated using Chat GPT (for now, this is the closest to the original translation) :

What came to mind was ramune. It was a mysterious sword whose blade was covered with bubbles that rose to the surface, burst, and vanished.
Sorry to keep you waiting. This sword is called Memory. It's the eighth Genesis-class weapon I've created since I came back to life. Every event that has occurred throughout the Three Thousand Worlds—including this Cardinal World—is engraved into this sword as a perfectly clear record.
Hearing that, I almost blurted out, Isn't that basically the Akashic Records?! But I stopped myself, because I had already realized that was probably exactly what it was.

All the information from the entire cosmology is contained within it. It is the 8th Genesis-class sword, created by Veldanava.

I was told that this could be classified as "Selective Omniscience".

But I find that contradictory to the very nature of an omniscient being.

The term "Selective Omniscience" is often used on the wiki to describe characters or items that possess total knowledge of specific concepts, records, or a predetermined set of data, rather than being inherently all-knowing about every absolute thing across all layers of reality.

In the case of Veldanava's 8th Genesis-class sword, "Memory", it contains all information from the entire cosmology up to the point of its creation or within its specific structural framework. However, a truly Omniscient being does not just hold a fixed container of cosmic data; they would also instantly know the thoughts, potential futures, and unpredictable choices of characters outside that specific record, as well as things operating beyond that cosmology's boundary.

Because the sword functions as a perfect blueprint or localized database of the verse's laws and history, calling it "Nigh-Omniscience via Information Access" or "Cosmic Awareness" is usually much more accurate under wiki standards. The term "Selective Omniscience" is just a shorthand way people on Discord or forums use to say "all-knowing, but only within this specific pool of information," which is why it feels logically contradictory to the absolute definition of true Omniscience.

So, Nigh-Omniscient. That seemed logical to me.

Thank you for your answers 🙏
