Well, the problem with making it compulsory is that it would be nigh impossible to enforce, and people tend to rebel and not care when they feel that restrictions are too tight.
Worrying about rebellion just halts progress rep, for the most part our majority of users follow the rules here and enforcing a simple rule won't lead to chaos or heavy restrictions. I think for the purpose of this character indexing site, we should advocate more for accuracy. It's not a bug sacrifice nor is it a burden to users here.

Well, I still definitely think that we should make it a strong suggestion, and not a compulsion. Othervise we would almost be required to start deleting pages for a comparatively minor reason.

If they created the character then shouldn't they at least should be able to give some brief explanation of the power. If they don't how are we suppose to know if they even actually have it?.

Likewise, I agree with this.

It should be a strong suggestion, but it would be impossible to enforce this rule absolutely across all profiles.

I agree with doing a suggestion for this. It'll take a REALLY long time, but i can still see this work whenever we get the chance to do it in this fashion.

@Ant I wouldn't say it's a minor reason. If a character has Reality Warping, Mind Manipulation, Soul Manipulation, Concept Manipulation, Casuailty Manipulation and other hegh abilities but they have no explanation what so ever and are just on their page I don't think that Characters page should be their when that have no explanation period as to why they have these abilities or what they can even do with them.

Also, this rule deals more exclusively with esoteric abilities that are often treated as NLFs by certain users in VsMatches. The famous "Lol, Reality Warper, wins".

For instance, The Evil Twins from Crash Bandicoot are Reality Warpers ("Fools! You thought these two body toys could defeat us!? We are MASTERS of the Infinite Dimensions, with power over reality itself")

Ignoring the Infinite Dimension hyperbole, while they are Reality Warpers, their applications of such are:

  • Removing Cortex's brain through his ear but still keeping him alive and thinking
  • Opening space-time gates to traverse through the infinite dimensions
  • Making one of these gates fold onto itself until vanishing
  • Transforming a Totem into a living monster
  • Transforming a birdcage into a giant robot
  • Transforming the Aku-Uka Brothers into regular wooden masks
Certainly powerful stuff, specially for a Tier 7, but a user who has no idea of their powerset and just skimmed through profiles would go "Lol, they win cause Reality Warping".

However, there really isn't any point in doing elaborate explanations for powers such as Energy Blasts or Fire Manipulation.

Also, no one should ever rely solely on our profiles to know the power of a character. This wiki has never claimed to be infallible or omniscient. It's more like an easy guide and a way for people to have fun indexing characters they like. The best way for someone to know how powerful a character is, is to read / watch / play the work they come from.

The purpose for the enforcement of said rule is to eventually have all profiles both already created and potential ones in the near future all following this rule. Without a little initiative, than the process will either slow down to such a incredibly slow pace it's almost as though nothing's changed or it dies altogether.

We already delete profiles or entire verses that are just a mess so what's wrong with enforcing(or to put it in a softer more "friendly" way of putting it) new users or old users when making a profile please add a small explanation as to where said character gets its abilities from or just link the ability to the technique or power it gets it from. It tastes so little effort no user will be bothered by it honestly. And if a few are its on them

I'm find with just making a strong suggestion, but make it bold, make it seem wrong to not add the exposition or link to abilties, we don't have to force people but we can make it bla tangly obvious we don't want profiles that have no explanation to their abilities. I don't want the wording to be forceful and make it mandatory but I also don't want it be a rule that has no power, that theirs no effect to making a bad or bland profile. Is it so bad to want better looking pages for are site to look better?

How about something like this:

  • It is strongly preferred that when creating profiles, you add explanations for less self-evident and more confusing powers and abilities that the character possesses, like Reality Warping, Conceptual Manipulation or Causality Manipulation. Such powers can have very broad interpretations and are ripe to be fallaciously interpreted by users on Versus Matches, so it is appreciated that you specify the nature and scope of these abilities in the character's profile, either briefly in the "Powers and Abilities" section, or in larger detail in the "Notable Attacks/Techniques".
Does this sound good?

I obviously also want the profiles of this site to be better, but I am also trying to be realistic about what we can reasonably enforce.

We would likely have to start deleting an awful lot of othervise perfectly acceptable pages if we make this rule completely mandatory, which would drive away frustrated contributors from the wiki.

I usually prefer to be cautious, due to potentially bad consequences.

I do think that it is a good idea to make this a strong suggestion however, and we might also have to adjust our Standard Format for Character Profiles page somewhat in accordance with this.

Yes I think that looks good. Maybe add an example at the end to link The move that is the reason the ability is there like.

Something like Precogntion(Via [insert name of technique here.]) to give a better understanding to new users or maybe even recurring.

@Ant

I think it should be rewritten a slight bit to flow better too, yes.

@Grudge

If we are to use Precognition, how about:

Example: "Precognition (Through [Insert name of power here.], Can sense nearby danger and predict enemy attacks before they occur)

Here is a draft for a rewrite of the regulation:

"When creating new character profiles it is strongly preferred that you add explanations for the extents and natures of less self-evident and more confusing powers and abilities. Examples include Reality Warping, Conceptual Manipulation or Causality Manipulation. Such powers are likely to be inaccurately interpreted, whether by casual visitors or in versus matches. As such, it is appreciated if you specify the nature and scope of these abilities in the character profiles, either briefly in the "Powers and Abilities" sections, or in larger detail in "Notable Attacks/Techniques" sections further down in the pages."

Sorry about the initial repetition, I adjusted the text a bit further.

Okay. Thank you, although I made a few further minor stylistic adjustments.

Do you have a suggestion for a text section for the standard format page?

Yah I definitely agree with adding simple examples in the standard format page Matt and what you wrote ant.

It seems so ant, let us know if you are finished so than I can conclude and close this thread.

I have added the text to the Editing Rules page, but we still need to work out how and if we should adjust the standard format page.

https://vsbattles.fandom.com/wiki/Standard_Format_for_Character_Profiles

Let's see...

Powers and Abilities: A list of the character's general abilities (Please add links to the "Powers and Abilities" pages, if it is possible).

Example: Precognition (Through [Insert name of power here.], Can sense nearby danger and predict enemy attacks before they occur)

Then later...

Notable Attacks/Techniques: A list of some abilities the character generally uses.

Example: Energy Wave: [Character name] focuses his power on the palm of his hand and fires a beam of energy at his opponent.

^ These are just very basic powers I thought in the moment.

Okay. I am extremely busy with the daily backlog though, so I do not have the time and energy to properly work out the specifics, and this is a far too important page for any rush jobs.

I agree with Matt's and Ant's suggestion. The way they worded it it should work perfectly.

I also agree that we shouldn't make it compulsory.

I agree, reality warping is extrremely misunderstood and misused term. Having it on profiles unexplained is much worse than not having it at all. Either rxplain it or dont add it.

I have one question to be answered

Do we write the explanation like this

Able to this ability in this way

or

Ability (He can do this)

The latter version is probably preferable.

Yeah, it's a lot better in structure. "Fire Manipulation (Can shoot fire from his hands)" reads much better than "Can shoot flames from his hands", when you are going through a list of various powers.

So if an explanation is too long, but it's already placed down below, would you say something like Fire Manipulation via [power name], Fire Manipulation (See power below), or do both fit equally?

You can probably do...

Powers and Abilities: Fire Manipulation via <name>

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

<name> - Ability to manipulate fire by shooting it from his nostrils up to 15 meters.

My only problem with the suggested formatting is that characters like The God Emperor of Mankind and BB would look something like this:

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Information Manipulation, Magic Resistance, Space-Time Manipulation (Can freely distort the axis of time and can freeze time and space at will with Domina Cornam, Shifted events in the timeline and reconstructed past, present, and future at the Far Side of the Moon to resurrect those who would have died in the original timeline and restart the Holy Grail War), Causality Manipulation (Can rewrite the laws of cause and effect at will and eliminate the effect of her opponent's attacks and abilities with Potnia Therion), Life and Death Manipulation (Has the Earth Mother Goddess's authority over bringing life and giving death), Age Manipulation (Can deage her foes with the Babyfication curse), Fate Manipulation (Can decide and select the future as she desires from an infinite number of futures and impose it on the world), Time Travel (Can send others backward through time as she desires and relay information the past or future), Matter Manipulation, Probability Manipulation, Mind Manipulation, Illusion Creation (Can make her targets see whatever she wants them to see, bypassing Gilgamesh's powerful Magic Resistance to make him perceive her as Saber and destroy their sense of self by trapping them in a "Bug Space" to be endlessly tortured), Gravity Manipulation, Breaking the Fourth Wall (Knows what story cutscenes she is voiced in as well as the fact that she will only be voiced for those particular parts), Reality Warping, Time Paradox Immunity (Preset her future so that no matter what would happen in the past or present she would still achieve her goal of merging with the Moon Cell), Nigh-Omnipresence (Exists in past, present, and future simultaneously and can freely jump between them with a "higher-dimensional perspective" of space-time), Statistics Amplification, Sealing (Can seal foes into the ends of imaginary number space), Existence Erasure via C.C.C., Can exile her foes to different parts of the Moon Cell, Can resurrect Servants, Creation (Can create "High Servants" using parts of herself via viruses), Hacking (Can hack virtually any device), Power Nullification (The Golden Grail can nullify its target's supernatural abilities and powers and can strip away the information and powers of others through her command of imaginary number space), Absorption and Power Mimicry (Can break others down into data to absorb and make herself stronger, taking their powers in the process), Conceptual Manipulation (Can expunge the concept of the world and its auxiliary concepts and replace them with one of her own choosing with C.C.C.), Law Manipulation (Can swap out physical and magical laws as she desires and create "rules" for her games such as "no private conversations", making any and all forms of conversation other than eye contact useless and "no return crystals", deactivating that particular item's functions for as long as she wills it)

@Rep: Don't forget Reinhard. Considering he's someone who uses the powers of his Legion...that'd still be a lot to put it let alone those like Lucemo.

It can be written instead on Notable Attacks/Techniques, yes? The descriptions I mean. Just so it doesn't flood the upper part.

And maybe use of a 'hide upon loading the page' button that I know not how to do would help.
