He wasnt really throwing the match, he was clearly having his fun with yang
since when does semblance lower aura.....It only uses it, doesnt lower it
He lowered her to the lowest possible point, pretty risky. And Mercury couldnt have known yang would survive his barrage

I dont even get what your saying on that last point, but theres no point in framing Yang specifically, Framing coco or yatsuhashi would have been sufficient, yet they got their asses kicked, an Cinder didnt even rig the matches in this one for what we can tell, His surprised faces and gestures clearly made Mercury seem surprised, he even tried to defend himself by throwing a few kicks that yang dodged. He would have done that if he was trying to lose as yang was dangerously low.
None of that really says anything, backup plans can still be thoughtout and planned, and be praised. Emerald did what she did to attract to grimm and thats all that really matters
Theres things that also point towards him being surprise, such as his surprised facial expressions and a "holding-back move".
How to Hold back.

Yes Semblances do not use up aura, I don't know where that came from.
But then I'll ask you this: why would they NOT pick the match where Mercury fights? They must have picked the fight for him, it makes absolutely no sense since they have the power to do so.
Now with that out of the way, since they can pick the matches, why would they pick Yang? They know how powerful she is, she destroyed a paladin. If they wanted Mercury to simply advance to the next round then they would have picked someone weaker. They saw RWBY fight Grimm during Volume 2 chapter 12, Roman has had many encounters with them (paladin), and Neo easily gauged how tough Yang was. If they simply wanted win and pass the round then they would have gone with someone else (there were many other options).

Also keep in mind, this is the finals. Want to know what they had to gain from framing yang specifically? The students in the finals are regarded as that kingdom's best in that tournament. Not only was yang getting framed a way to attract Grimm, it also was a way to discredit ozpin, by showing one his bests student being a "monster"
