I meant post time-skip. Luffy's strongest actual life/death opponent in the series was one of the Admirals. Doffy was his hardest fight just looking at post time-skip.

I'm talking about in terms of a fight... Big Mom just "noped" a Kong Gun and Luffy ran away. Against Doflamingo and Katakuri, it was a dedicated fight until the very end.

Pre time-skip, Aokiji and Kizaru each nearly killed Luffy on the spot after trolling him.

I suppose it would've been the Kata vs Luffy case where Luffy just runs for 10 minutes, gets haki back, fights for a bit, then goes Gear 4th again to finish it off.

Oda's didn't seem totally sure by his statement at first. But i can understand if Luffy could have run away.
