This doesn't make any sense, he could have been holding his breath while flying (he could have done that without problems since he's at least quintillions times faster than light)

It's equally possible for him to have held his breath or not, we should go by the one that gives less assumptions. I don't agree with giving him a whole new ability based on a assumption.

Going off possibility to remove an ability isn’t a good thing. All it would do is make that ability a possibility, meaning it would be possible self sustenance type 1

DB characters who can't breathe in space die very very quickly, for example blue vegeta died almost immediately after being exposed to space.

The exact same situation happened all the way back in the namek saga and it was made so explicitly clear that goku wouldn't survive the planet explosions purely because he can't breathe in space while frieza could.
In fact, a bisected messed up humiliated frieza on the brink of death unconcious tanked namek's explosion and he was getting fondled by Goku.

Apart from what Fluffy said, Whis clearly implies that it's because of space.
