Kino and the motorrad Hermes travel to the city of Roanapur. Although Kino is only staying at Roanapur for three days and two nights before leaving, Kino attracts the suspicion of the thugs as Kino is a still considered a youngster and thus reminds them of the notorious Hänsel and Gretel. The thugs order a manhunt on Kino, and chaos ensues across the city. This catches the attention of the big four crime syndicates, and Balalaika decides to have the situation settled with a good 'ol fight to the death. On the final day of Kino's stay, Kino is invited to the docks for a shootout against Roanapur's deadliest gunman, Revy. If Kino wins, then Kino lives but will have to leave the city and never come back (and Revy dies), but if Kino loses then Kino will end up dead.
