Itachi and Amaterasu

Me and a friend of mine were having this discussion concerning Itachi and he said Itachi's Amaterasu uses photons as a means of travel since what we see are photons.

So basically Amaterasu should travel using photons as a medium since Amaterasu ignites along the users line of sight.

Anyone mind explaining this for me?
