That reminds me of a book i read hearts of heroes transistor, the main character gets a ton of nanobots on her body to make a surgery but they end up stuck in her body, and at one point those nanobots get an actual soul its not clear how they got it and they dont actually die in the book but its the closest example i know to what you asked for
