I did some math and got 17414241.481 kilotons which should translate to 17 gigatons.

Several is minimum 3, I believe. 300,000 yards is 274320m in radius. It's said that if the star STRUCK the sea, implying a ground-based explosion.

If you have an idea of the size of the star you could potentially use Stefan-Boltzmann law to find out the luminosity (i.e energy given off every second) and just use that.
