Gengar vs Grimmsnarl

How do we deal with pokemon abilities in a pokemon vs. pokemon battle? Like is this prankster grimmsnarl and cursed body gengar or does that not matter here?

Use your knowledge to tell what parts of those abilities are game mechanics and which are canon

Assume they have both abilities

Yes. There is an ongoing revision for how Pokémon stuff interacts with over verses, but in a Pokémon Vs Pokémon they should all function exactly as they're supposed to.

Anyways, they both have a type advantage, but isn't Grimmsnarl G-Max Snooze just GG if he can live a couple Max Poison moves?

Gengar has hax

Its fear manipulation though. Gengar has phasing through dimensions too, and can heal and regen
And Grimmsnarl will put him to sleep, at which point none of that helps.
And it is fear manipulation, but Pokémon can still attack while trapped.

Actually, Grimmsnarl only has to survive ONE attack, since he can max guard after that to ensure the sleep.
After Gengar is asleep, he can just spam dark attacks.

"G-Max Snooze inflicts damage and has a 50% chance of making the target drowsy, causing it to fall asleep the next turn"

I wouldn't say it's GG. Gengar resists Sleep Manipulation.

Grimmsnarl would need to end this fight immediately for him to win since Gengar has cursed body which will limit his movepool as the fight goes AND the fact that Grimmsnarl has pitiful sp. def. Gengar would easily murk grimmsnarl if he wakes up.

I thought the profiles only cover the mainline games?

Shouldn't mystery dungeon versions of the pokemon just get their own separate profile?

Actually, the only attacking poison move Gengar learns is smog... which is pitiful.

Well, the exact Spdf stat is sort of game mechanics. If we used that I could just go
0 SpA Grimmsnarl-Gmax G-Max Snooze vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Dynamax Gengar-Gmax: 338-402 (64.7 - 77%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

But we can't.
Though it is worth mentioning that Grimmsnarl's G-Max move does 2x while Gengar's does 1/2x.
Also max moves can't be disabled.

Nah they cover everything that's canon, Executor did a thread on that a while back.

So, so far we have:
Grimmsnarl has a 2x G-max move, while Gengar's does 1/2x.
Both of their G-Max effects are useless.
Gengar's cursed body is countered by the nature of Dynamax, given max moves can't be disabled.

He gets it from the first Mystery Dungeon - Blue/Red Rescue Team
Oh, I see.
Okay, so he can't be put to sleep.
Still has better typing where moves are concerned.
Hate that the IQ skills mean newer pokemon are just straight up weaker egh

Honestly this fight would be more interesting with their actual move sets. The max moves are so generic lol.

Eh, older Pokemon are always gonna be stronger on average than newer ones, simply for the fact that they've had more time to appear in the anime, the manga, side games, TCG, more dex entries, etc.

Anyways, Gengar has a lot of versatility but yeah some of that won't matter due to Max Moves. Still, Gengar gets Clear Smog through breeding, and with the special attack boosts it gets each time it'll become quite spammable, and Mid regen will keep it in the game for a while. Kinda siding with Gengar atm

True. Half of Snarl's movepool is negated by ghost type, including his ability to speed-debuff and attack-buff.
Which means all that's left is Dark and Fairy. Dark turns into Max-Snooze, and Fairy just creates terrain.

There's worlds where Gengar loses if it tries to use ghost-type moves instead, though.
Do we know if Gengar is smart enough to use one of his only two poison moves consistently enough not to get beat down by Max-Snooze which does 2x?
