Oh yeah, there's no respawn.... - My journal through the "Solo Gengar Pokélocke" challenge

Hey, greetings from Brazil

Idk why this idea came into my mind, ig i'm just fusing my most time-consuming activities atm (besides when i was beating Digimon World DS with a single digimon and Mandatory-Upgrades-Only Bakugan Battle Brawlers DS or developing a wall of text to disturb Reaper yet again with a Horus W)

I got inspired by TheBones5's FNaFlocke video and by the general concept of CarcinogenSDA's channel (both of which i recommend if you want to watch something lengthy)... and Pokémon Stadium... to create a challenge i could play on the long af bus before and after the work on my poor Self-CFW'd o3ds - the one in the title which idk if i call Pokélocke or Franchiselocke. Details on how my attempts went will be in the posts

As you can imagine, having a Gengar (quite hard to hide that it's my favorite one, though i'm not a "gen-oner") is quite an advantage, but i think the rest of the rules do more than just balancing out the advantages he may have, here they are:

  • Games must be played in the order i'll display in a bit, starting by Pokémon Red
  • No Pokémon besides the Gengar i'm given in the start can be used in battles
    • If a move like roar brings them up i gotta take them off. If any ability impedes it and it generates any advantage in the fight... reset.
  • No knock outs. If Gengar's ever knocked out, i'll go back to the start of Pokémon Red
  • No items in battle (held items are ok though)
    • Gengarite is NOT allowed
  • No heavy grind allowed besides the start of the game
    • General level cap for the grind is at the 1st gym leader's pokémon - the lowest level one
    • Great example of this is Pokémon Red itself, where it is VERY unlikely to win against lvl 12 Geodude and lvl 14 Onix with only attacking 35pp and being lvl 6 (unless we count Confuse Ray's RNG and this is N O T challenging, so a grind does seems worthy enough
  • Save will be edited for me to have a level 4 Gengar, a lvl 1 Mew and a lvl 1 Ditto
    • Gengar will have the moves his learnset permits up until this level, the IV spread to be shiny in gen 1 (and obviously be shiny, just because) and no EVs
    • Mew and Ditto will have no moves outside of HMs
And the order the games'll be played... will depend on the round.
You ever heard of Pokémon Stadium, where you beat the game a whole other time? I did myself a disfavor and did a similar system here

ROUND 1-
  1. Red (11 attempts until first beaten)
  2. Crystal (? attempts until first beaten; Current attempt is here)
  3. Emerald
  4. Platinum
  5. White
    1. Black 2
  6. Y
  7. Ultra Moon
  8. Sword
    1. DLCs
  9. Violet
    1. DLCs
ROUND 2-
  1. Leaf Green
  2. Soul Silver
  3. Omega Ruby
  4. Brilliant Diamond
  5. Legends ZA
  6. Legends Arceus
    1. DLCs

the first attempts are a bit blurry for me, i know there are like 3 where i wrongfully didn't give Gengar Night Shade and got walled because nobody took damage from Lick

There are 2 where Blue f***ed me up at SS Anne and one where he walled me right before Victory Road (i got sooooooo mad holy f***ing shit)

All i know is that now i'm at attempt 9 if i'm not wrong and basically all Pokémon Red is scripted lol

  • All goes just as normal until the trainer in the end of Viridian Forest, grabbing the antidote on the usual way to get a bit of money
  • Grind until lvl 12, should have the exact PP for it
  • Beat the trainer in Brock's gym (who's actually like 1.5x harder than Brock himself)
    • This is actually crucial to get a balanced early game, since you'll be facing Brock's Onix at his level, 14, you'll have just enough to face Blue and maybe not die against his Pidgeotto's Sand Attack, Bulbasaur's Leech Seed (if those 2 happened i'm 99,9999% sure it's over) and Misty's Starmie existing
      • Y'all talking about Whitney's Miltank? See what that Starmie can do to you. SPECIALLY here.
  • All goes just as normal until Lt. Surge, and if you don't teach the Thunderbolt TM he gives you, i am quite sure this game is not possible lmao
  • All's still pretty normal, Rocket Hideout where you get all loot you can, do the same in Lavender Tower then go to Fuschia
    • Cool hint is to buy a water on the last floor of the Celadon Mart. Forgetting to do it brings some boring roadblocks
    • At the end of this it is expected to have beaten Giovani twice, Koga, Sabrina and Erika.
      • Sabrina IS SCARY and always will be. Hope you get that Hypnosis or throw Thunderbolt, NEVER try Night Shade
  • If the player is only using the EV boosters on the floor, selling TMs and healing items should give the money for like 7 or 8 of them in the Celadon Mart
    • All of them in Speed or 50/50 in Speed and Special, i prefer the latter.
    • My AuDHD ass keeps selling s*** and buying there, you do you, but not using them makes this quite hard.
  • Blaine and Giovani should give you no trouble, but this iteration of Blue has the same thing about the others: 80% of losing if 2 Sand Attacks hit
    • 1 usually is tankable, should bring you no harm, but here it can get you to die against either Kadabra, Venusaur...Or both.

last night i bought a Carbos and put it in my Mew right after

higuruma-hiromi-gif.webp

then had a suuuuuuuuuuper close call vs Sabrina right after

Attempt 9 has just ended ;-;

Again at the Blue before Victory Road. This run had a few unwanted optional trainers and i still got him at level 49, which i think is what is barring me from getting over his Alakazam, who even at lvl 50 is two-shotting me whereas my Thunderbolt is dealing like 30% of his HP, and i don't think other TMs would be helping me because i'm missing Hypnosis all the time, and i won't be risking having a f* ton of effort just to lose again because Thunder/Whatever missed.
Think i'll be grinding to lvl 60 where it's very likely that both will 3-shot each other and as i go faster, i should end up winning
Though i'll have to work through how tf i beat Venusaur while being low-health

And it is very likely that i'll have to grind in the victory road too. welp, here we go, attempt 10

Attempt 10 ended in the exact same battle aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I've added the levels with the same save editor i used to put gengar in there, because i won't be training for like 7 hours in a route.
Attempt 11 in progresssss

I HAVE BEATEN THE GAME

By leveling up to 60 i get to blue in level 65 and gg'd his ass but OH MY GOD i was so scared against Alakazam and after getting burned by Arcanine

I was beaten by PP getting over and Gengar not obeying me from lvl 11 onwards, oh my god...

Shame, but still the first defeat and im able to do waaaaaay better, heads up!

been a few years since i've played

i loved playing Ubers but was never good at it one more instance of "i'm very good at doing this at PvE and PvP makes me look stupid" lmfao
ive personally been playing alot of national dex latley. Im using mega houndoom leavanny and its going well suprisingly

i can speak a lot about gen 6 meta and maybe gen 7 meta, but everything after that confuses me heavily

y'know Adef's youtube channel? i never thought such a stupid combo would make Sandaconda meta because people are too dumb to remember that'd be a possibility lol
