Remember that in 4e and 5e, there is a level cap, unlike in earlier editions. In 4e the level cap is 30 for players (there is no level cap for monsters, though the strongest seen in the edition's life was Bahamut with 36 lv.). And in 5e is lv. 20 for players and 30 for monsters (with players also having a cap for abilities: no ability can surpass 20, 22 with a feat or a special feature).

So, your 50 in 3.5, by rules goes converted to a 30 in 4e. And lorewise, that is powerful. I mean, a 30 lv. PC has stuff like the Demispell in 4e. In 5e, you go to 20 (cuz 21+ or more 4e characters also go to that, using the official "earlier editions to 5e" conversion rules)

I think only 3e has had no level cap. OD&D no one could even get to 20 iirc, BD&D 36 was the level cap for mortals and 36 the level cap for immortals (if you made it to level 73 you ascended beyond godhood), AD&D's highest classes capped at 50 or 40 with expansions I think, 4e caps at 30, and 5e currently caps at 20.

To add, going by the "Deities and Demigods" book most gods are 20 HD outsiders with 20-40 character levels (some could be higher, like Bane being level 65).

Yeah I remember looking through that. Didn't most gods (avatars, granted, but gods nonetheless) have like multiple classes at levels 20-40? Just out of curiosity. It's been a long time since I leafed through that book.

I mean. That's basically what an avatar is, and also (generally) puts the god in less danger. It's a weaker rendition of the being to allow them to do stuff from afar. Sorta like possession.
