So:

I honestly don't even know why this was ever accepted as Invulnerability. All there is, is this single statement about them being "invincible" under the specific circumstances at place in Dawn of Sorrow. Nothing about them being immune to conventional attacks due to some special ability, just this. And to top it off, we actually know what this "invincibility" entails, and it isn't Invulnerability:

Julius Belmont: Watch it. He's tough. Especially for me, since I can't use Magic Seals.
Soma Cruz: Hold on, Julius. You can't use Magic Seals?
Julius Belmont: Uh-huh. What about it?
Soma Cruz: Well, didn't you run into monsters that you couldn't destroy?
Julius Belmont: No, I destroyed them before they could reconstitute. They weren't a problem. But this time, I don't think that'll work.
Soma Cruz: (You've got to be joking. That should've been impossible.)

So, yeah. The gates to the Abyss just cause the monsters to "reconstitute," which is something we see in gameplay, too: If you fail to correctly draw the Magic Seal to shut down the gate, they just come back with low HP, and you have to beat them again. That's all their invincibility is.
