Hello everyone

The purpose of this thread is to show that the backstage and gods true form are qualitatively superior to the real world. This Q&A might be helpful.

Here is what we know about the backstage:
“Rigged games,” said Shadow, remembering, “are the easiest to beat.” There was no answer. Nothing moved in the shadows.

Shadow said, “Goodbye,” and then he said, “Father.” But by then there was no trace of anybody else in the cavern. Nobody at all. Shadow walked back up to the Seven States Flag Court, but saw nobody, and heard nothing but the crack and whip of the flags in the storm-wind. There were no people with swords at the Thousand-Ton Balanced Rock, no defenders of the Swing A-Long bridge. He was alone.

There was nothing to see. The place was deserted. It was an empty battlefield.

No. Not deserted. Not exactly. This was Rock City. It had been a place of awe and worship for thousands of years; today the millions of tourists who walked through the gardens and swung their way across the Swing-A-Long bridge had the same effect as water turning a million prayer wheels. Reality was thin here. And Shadow knew where the battle must be taking place. With that, he began to walk. He remembered how he had felt on the carousel, tried to feel like that...

He remembered turning the Winnebago, shifting it at right angles to everything. He tried to capture that sensation—And then, easily and perfectly, it happened.
It was like pushing through a membrane, like plunging up from deep water into air. With one step he had moved from the tourist path on the mountain to...

To somewhere real. He was Backstage. He was still on the top of a mountain, that much remained the same. But it was so much more than that. This mountaintop was the quintessence of place, the heart of things as they were. Compared to it, the Lookout Mountain he had left was a painting on a backdrop, or a papier-mâché model seen on a TV screen—merely a representation of the thing, not the thing itself.

This was the true place. AMERICAN GODS P417

Shadow in the backstage
The rock walls formed a natural amphitheater. Paths of stone that wound around and across it, forming twisty natural bridges that Eschered through and across the rock walls.

And the sky...

The sky was dark. It was lit, and the world beneath it was illumi-nated by a burning greenish-white streak, brighter than the sun, which forked crazily across the sky from end to end, like a white rip in the darkened sky.

It was lightning, Shadow realized. Lightning held in one frozen moment that stretched into forever. The light it cast was harsh and unforgiving: it washed out faces, hollowed eyes into dark pits.

This was the moment of the storm.

The paradigms were shifting. He could feel it. The old world, a world of infinite vastness and illimitable resources and future, was being confronted by something else—a web of energy, of opinions, of gulfs.

People believe, thought Shadow. It’s what people do. They believe. And then they will not take responsibility for their beliefs; they conjure things, and do not trust the conjurations. People populate the dark-ness; with ghosts, with gods, with electrons, with tales. People imagine, and people believe: and it is that belief, that rock-solid belief, that makes things happen. AMERICAN GODS P418
From my understanding of the backstage is: Real, Darkness, True place, heart/Quintessence, Infinite vastness, Illimitable resources and future, a world populated with belief (gods, ghosts, electrons and tales)

Changes:
  • The Backstage will become 1-A realm.
  • Gods true forms which are abstractions of belief will become (quoting superman №1 hater) 1-A.
  • All of gods hax will become 1-A as their power come from belief.
  • Gods true form stats should get an upgrade like 1-A range, immeasurable speed...
  • Maybe Plot manipulation somewhere ?
  • Backstage gain possible NEP? (I'm not an expert on it)

This seems pretty blatant to me.
  • Gods true forms which are abstractions of belief will become (quoting superman №1 hater) 1-A.
Also looks good

I assume Gods have like avatars which they use within the world and then True Forms which exist in the backstage, in which case not seeing proof here that the avatars exercise the power of their true forms.

Yea, this is obvious.
  • Maybe Plot manipulation somewhere ?
Don't see any evidence for this.
  • Backstage gain possible NEP? (I'm not an expert on it)
Also don't see this, infinite blackness isn't proof of NEP.

Make sense.

They've shown multiple feats like turning the moon into a coin, changing the weather, stop time and other forms of reality manipulation. And they could kill eachothers or themselves.

The main source of power is belief so anything could affect them if they belive in it. Also Magic
“She wants to be really alive. Can we do that? Is that possible?” Wednesday said nothing for long enough that Shadow started to wonder if he had heard the question, or if he had, possibly, fallen asleep with his eyes open. Then he said, staring ahead of him as he talked, “I know a charm that can cure pain and sickness, and lift the grief from the heart of the grieving.
“I know a charm that will heal with a touch.
“I know a charm that will turn aside the weapons of an enemy.
“I know another charm to free myself from all bonds and locks.
“A fifth charm: I can catch an arrow in flight and take no harm from it.” His words were quiet, urgent. Gone was the hectoring tone, gone was the grin. Wednesday spoke as if he were reciting the words of a religious ritual, or remembering something dark and painful.
“A sixth: spells sent to hurt me will hurt only the sender.
“A seventh charm I know: I can quench a fire simply by looking at it.
“An eighth: if any man hates me, I can win his friendship.
“A ninth: I can sing the wind to sleep and calm a storm for long enough to bring a ship to shore. “Those were the first nine charms I learned. Nine nights I hung on the bare tree, my side pierced with a spear’s point. I swayed and blew in the cold winds and the hot winds, without food, without water, a sacrifice of myself to myself, and the worlds opened to me.
“For a tenth charm, I learned to dispel witches, to spin them around in the skies so that they will never find their way back to their own doors again.
“An eleventh: if I sing it when a battle rages it can take warriors through the tumult unscathed and unhurt, and bring them safely back to their hearths and their homes.
“A twelfth charm I know: if I see a hanged man I can bring him down from the gallows to whisper to us all he remembers.
“A thirteenth: if I sprinkle water on a child’s head, that child will not fall in battle.
“A fourteenth. I know the names of all the gods. Every damned one of them.
“A fifteenth: I have a dream of power, of glory, and of wisdom, and I can make people believe my dreams.” His voice was so low now that Shadow had to strain to hear it over the plane’s engine noise.
“A sixteenth charm I know: if I need love I can turn the mind and heart of any woman.
“A seventeenth, that no woman I want will ever want another. “And I know an eighteenth charm, and that charm is the greatest of all, and that charm I can tell to no man, for a secret that no one knows but you is the most powerful secret there can ever be.” P225

Odin explaining the purpose of sacrifice to Shadow in a dream.
The man he was following took his long stick, which Shadow real-ized now, as it moved, was actually a spear, and he slashed at the dog’s stomach with it, in one knifelike cut downward. Steaming entrails tum-bled onto the snow. “I dedicate this death to Odin,” said the man, for-mally.

“It is only a gesture,” he said, turning back to Shadow. “But gestures mean everything. The death of one dog symbolizes the death of all dogs. Nine men they gave to me, but they stood for all the men, all the blood, all the power. It just wasn’t enough. One day, the blood stopped flowing. Belief without blood only takes us so far. The blood must flow.” P339
The war between the old and the new gods was his and Loki's plan.

This seems pretty solid. Though if this goes through you’ll probably have to remove all of the show only powers & abilities

Has anyone addressed this yet? A lot of the pages use information from the show, but the 1-A justifications are from the novel. Unless there is proof it applies to the show as well, the show powers & abilities should be removed if 1-A goes through.

It will take time to collect scans and statment from the novel, but I'm working on it.

I think "Backstage (Books)" should be a key, then 🤔
Way easier than revising every page or making new ones to separate show and books...
...me personally, I would composite the pages but idk if VSBW works like that

I don’t think VSBW allows composites across multiple canons anymore. It doesn’t help that the Verse Page mentions the pages are mostly based on the show instead of the books.

If you can manage to find the Powers & Abilities for the book versions, then it makes more sense to make separate pages.

Damn

So it would make more sense to add "Backstage (Books)" key if the abilities are the same?

Even if all of the abilities are identical, then it would make more sense to convert them into book pages rather than slapping on a Backstage (Books) section.

Or we can create a seperated verse like "American Gods (Books)" and "American Gods (Series)"

I feel the same way, the show ans book need their own pages
