God of War Discussion Thread

Saw a Gamespot Interview with Ariel, interesting information in it.

So, they indirectly confirm that the Everywhen isn't just gods, but all magical beings.

Laufey isn’t technically a God, right?

For us, this [place] is a return for all magic. So it’s not just gods, but magical creatures and all sorts of things. Magic is pulled to this place.

And yeah, time for the Everywhen isn't normal at all.

Why is it called Everywhen? It feels like time might be a bit funny there.

I won’t spoil any of the surprises of things, but I think for us [the Everywhen] gave this concept of all time and no time and a place beyond the mortal realms. So it was kind of an internal kind of idea that just kind of stuck after a while.

So from what I'm seeing online, besides the usual hate for playing as a women which is absolutely dumb, is that the main two complaints so far are that we have a cube named Frank and they kept the modern humor writing from Ragnarok.
I don't necessarily believe that playing as a woman is the true issue here (sure there are people who are not happy just because of that, but i'm pretty sure they are the minority). It's more that they decided to make a new mainline GoW title without Kratos as the main playable character. If this had been a spinoff, the backlash likely wouldn't have been as bad, especially if the game hadn't been directly given the God of War title.

To be honest, if they had made a mainline game focused on Atreus (with Egypt be the most wanted mythological setting after Greek and Norse), it might also have been accepted more by most people, as he is a major established character whom most of the fandom has accepted, for the most part. Laufey, while important, was more in the background and was someone who had already been dead from the beginning of the Norse era, only appearing in flashbacks.

And considering the current cultural/political tension in the Western sphere between "soy boys" and "chuds", how many video games with more progressive playable characters often end up being either controversial (Ghost of Yōtei) or downright bad (Forspoken), and then adding other factors like the modern feel of the dialogue, the presence of the Cube (which does feel very off in a God of War setting, especially when it has such a non-mythical/non-epic name like Frank), or the cute animal, this shitstorm was to be expected.

And it doesn't and will not matter whether the game itself is going to be good or bad.

Would a Calliope game have gotten the same backlash?

Definitely, like lets be honest how many GoW fans where hoping to have her as the main playable character? Or how many would be interested to such concept or take it seriously? At least Laufey was strongly establish to be very powerful warrior on par with the likes of Thor and Kratos, so in that aspect she work better.

But her? Unless after GoW3 she end up in Everywhen and she trained for centuries killing monsters and unlocked her inner godly powers (due of her be technically a demigod), i don't see how it would make sense for her to be a main playable character, especially without turning her into a Mary Sue.

He should be 1-C already

If you want to be naive, sure.

Yeah, I mean, there are a lot of games getting unfairly hated because "Woke" or something along those lines. But in the case of Faye, it's not really appeal to DEI is what bothers me or other YouTubers to whom have a solid track record. It's more so that games should prioritizing making a game that plays great first, a great story second, and agenda messages if possible should be done right instead of poorly force-fed to gamers.

The real criticism to the game's presentation is that Faye's anticipated backstory seems lazily thrown in and looks set up for a failing plot hole. And at best, it feels like an idea that works for a prequal but not so much a follow up/sequal.

so do you guys think magic bounded to earth kinda got rectoned with existence of everywhen?

It was never a thing, it was just Freya not knowing the full picture. We all know the Magic got destroyed when Fear Zeus nulled Kratos. Our Magic page already states this out loud and clear.
