It does add a lot to Dante's character, it introduces Patty and Morrison who are also important for developing Dante, it gave us some pretty decent villains and helped expand on demon lore, it was where Trish and Lady met, it developed both Trish and Lady, honestly it's a decent show.

Always has been. Great music, amazing saturday morning chapters and dwelling in Dante's life day to day was interesting.
Yeah the fights were poor and the story wasn't like most animes but it was good, after all it was to show Dante's everyday life.

Even Project X-Zone referenced that. Jin and Kazuya have a scene with Dante and Vergil where Dante comments that their relationship makes his own with Vergil look healthy by comparison, and Vergil rebukes this by reminding him that theirs is also bad. So this similarity has been acknowledged in an actual game.
