Metroid V: To Infinity and Beyond

I saw a Reddit post theorizing that each of the soldiers would have their own sidequest rather than being a main story thing and depending on what you do they might die or not - I don't at all think this is going to be the case but it would actually be really cool to have Dark Souls-esque NPC questlines in Metroid and if I were to insert more characters in a Metroid story that's how I'd like to do it.

As things are, I'm not a fan of such a crowded story for Metroid but I wouldn't be opposed if they actually end up being well-written, I never really expected a "pure" Metroid experience especially since they showed the bike. My concern is that what we've seen of the writing has been pretty low quality, the Claptrap-type quipman is horrible and the guy rattling off about how much he wants to see his family is comically cliched. Hopefully they just picked some bad bits for the trailer and the rest of the game is at least decently written but I dunno, you'd expect them to put their best foot forward and this definitely isn't that.

Beyond's JP website was updated. I poked around and there's some somewhat interesting stuff - it's all DeepL mind you so not all of it is going to be super trustworthy translation-wise. There's some pretty significant story stuff here to the point that it might actually be minor spoilers. Also some pretty cool renders.

"The Dawn of a New Chapter - Cosmo Year 20X9.

The UTO Research Facility of the Galactic Federation, located on the Delason system planet Tanamar, was attacked by the Space Pirate Army led by Cyrax [Sylux]. Receiving the facility's distress call, Federation Headquarters dispatched Samus, who was on a nearby survey mission, to respond immediately.
"

Samus: "A bounty hunter among the galaxy's elite, capable of completing any mission, no matter how difficult. Responding to a distress call, they head for a Galactic Federation base, but are caught in an unexpected accident and end up being transported to an unknown planet..."

Sylux: "The mastermind behind the attack on the UTO Research Institute, a bounty hunter with a long-standing feud with Samus. Preparing for confrontation with the Galactic Federation Forces, Cyriac attacks research facilities across the galaxy, acquiring the Federation's latest technology one after another. Then, at a research facility on the planet Tanamar, he unexpectedly comes face to face with Samus." - Interesting that they call it a long-standing feud, for all we know she's only met him in Hunters.

Space Pirates: "The mastermind behind the attack on UTO Research Institute, a band of raiders plotting to dominate the galaxy. Composed of various alien forms, classified by military branch and rank. After command-class officers were fused with Cyrax Metroid and their consciousnesses hijacked, the entire military now operates under Cyrax's command."

Metroids: "Samus, having confronted Cyrax, noticed a familiar floating lifeform beside him. —An extraterrestrial lifeform, the “Metroid.” Created as an artificial lifeform, its superior biology has led to its repeated military exploitation as a biological weapon. The “Cyrax Metroids” are a strain cultivated by Cyrax, endowed with the ability to dominate the consciousness of their hosts." - In both this and the previous entry it seems pretty clear that Sylux's Metroids are mind-controlling the Space Pirates. It's kind of interesting, I wonder if he's the one who modified them, doesn't strike me as a science guy.

Lamorn: "The race that once inhabited Planet Veyros. Among them, those born with crystals on their foreheads were able to wield psychic abilities. On the top floor of Chrono Tower, Samus glimpses the final will of the last of the clan, “The Last Ramon.”" - So yeah, the Lamorn are extinct and we just see their ghosts. Kind of a shame but I suppose it makes sense. Interesting how they go out of their way to say it's only a few that could use psychic powers.

The troopers actually have their own page which contains actually a pretty huge spoiler - what seems to be a further Suit upgrade to the "Beyond" suit, alongside what must be a late game cutscene. The plot seems to feature both the troopers and Samus wanting to head back home, and the scene sees them finding a "master teleporter" to try (and presumably fail initially) to warp back to a known planet.. Anyways, the gameplay clips are in English, which is handy.

"Together we forge ahead - By modifying Ramon's technology to fit Samus's gear and providing it, among other ways, they assist in the adventure." - It seems like MacKenzie will be adapting Lamorn technology for Samus to use.

There's some parts of the site, including blurbs from the individual troopers, that I can't easily translate since they're pictures rather than text I could copy/paste.

MacKenzie - "As a mechanic, he handles maintenance and repairs for various vehicles, but he's also highly skilled as a computer technician. His timid nature has allowed him to avoid the worst situations time and again."

Tokabi, sniper guy with the black helmet. He's interesting, each trooper has a page quote and his is "May Solan light your path." He seems to be an outwardly religious individual, which is a first in the Metroid series. "A solitary hunter who volunteered for the Federation Army seeking stability in life. He always carries an amulet shaped like an arrowhead and arrow shaft, believing its protection has saved him from perilous situations."

Duke, the older black guy. "A veteran who has survived countless battles against the Space Pirates. His stubborn nature leads to constant clashes with superiors, but he is sincere and compassionate, a reliable presence on the battlefield."

Armstrong - the lady. Her quote is just her fangirling over Samus lol. "Private First Class of the Galactic Federation Forces. Possesses exceptional structural knowledge and operational skills with vehicles, mastering them intuitively. Her bright and proactive personality leads to frequent problem-solving successes. She holds an idealized admiration for Samus Aran."

VUE-995. "A combat android belonging to the Galactic Federation Forces. It pilots fighter craft, armored vehicles, and bipedal manned combat mechs in place of humans. While lacking programs governing emotions, instances of simulated emotional responses have been observed."

Onto the Viewros page. It shows a lot of areas some of which we haven't seen yet. Again I'd caution about spoilers, there's some juicy stuff in here.

Ice Belt - "A research facility in a cold region. Originally built to study various creatures from Buros, it was repurposed after the “Great Tragedy” to investigate its cause and find solutions. A transport system for containers called “Cryopods,” which lower a creature's body temperature for safe transport, is spread throughout the entire facility."
The "great tragedy" is pretty eyecatching. Obviously that's going to be when the Lamorn went extinct though it doesn't seem immediate given they tried to study and fix it. Presumably it's going to be some big Phazon-like threat.

Sol Valley - "A vast desert region on the planet Veyros. It serves as a hub connecting various areas, with the Chrono Tower towering over its center. Sol Valley is dotted with Green Crystals, crystallized forms of green energy, and also contains several Ramon ruins. These ruins lie underground and are said to contain items prepared by the Ramon tribe for the “Chosen One” who will appear someday."

Great Mines - "Deep underground mining sites. Ramone and his team excavated various ores, but among them, the discovery of “Buros Crystals” became the catalyst that propelled their civilization from a mechanical age to a psychic one. Equipped with a massive elevator at its center, it could transport the ores mined deep underground to the surface by loading them onto large vehicles."
The Lamorn seem to have "unlocked" their psychic powers somehow rather than being born with them, and then abandoned their technology. "Ramon" should just be the "Lamorn" species, so while the translations refer to him as an individual it might just be because the translation app is confused.
Fury Green - "A lush jungle region. It is home to the Sacred Tree and the Temple of Memory, built during ancient civilizations. Once upon a time, priests of Ramon offered prayers at the altar inside the temple, and their memories were stored within the tree. Placing a Green Crystal on the altar allows the memories stored within the tree to bear fruit as Memory Fruit. In addition, cutting-edge technology was brought to the temple during the age of mechanical civilization. The “Cargo Launcher” connecting Solvalei [Sol Valley] and the temple was created at that time."

Chrono Tower [This seems to be where the Last Lamorn is found, and also contains a strange dimension of sorts] - "The massive tower erected at the center of Solvalei stands as a symbol of psychic civilization. Every element—doors, elevators, and more—is engineered to respond to psychic power, barring entry to those without psychic abilities unless guided by a Guardian. The site of the “Trial” where the “Chosen One” is authenticated is also accessible from Chrono Tower. At its pinnacle sit the activation device for the Master Teleporter and the Healing Pod. It is also said that after the Great Tragedy, Ramon and his team modified the Cyboots into defensive robots within Chrono Tower itself."
Samus is gonna have to pass some trial before being accepted as the "chosen one". The master teleporter is what the troopers and Samus are looking for to get back home, and the healing pod... is probably also going to be significant.

Volt Forge: "A vehicle manufacturing plant shrouded in thunderclouds. Built during Ramon's mechanical civilization era, an artificial intelligence composed of organic cells managed the entire facility. Composed of multiple towers, each tower handled different functions: vehicle manufacturing, storage, and testing. It was equipped with devices that converted lightning strikes into electricity, ensuring a constant power supply as long as the devices functioned. Research and development for the Viola, as well as the suits required to pilot it, also took place here. The latest prototype remains within the facility to this day."

Flare Pool: "A facility built inside a volcano. It extracts “green energy” from Buros lava, packs it into large shells, and fires them toward Sol Valley using energy diffusion cannons. The diffusion of “green energy” was carried out to revitalize the flora and fauna living in the harsh environment."
Seems like the "green energy" is used for environmentalist purposes. Fat lot of good it's doing with the huge desert in the middle of the area, but I guess that's that.
If the map is accurate these seven are the only regions in the game, but there are also four crashed vehicles of presumably Federation origin. Maybe that's where you find the troopers, though that'd be weird since in theory it'd let you get them all at once. We're also told that "Solvalei is dotted with ruins once built by the Ramon tribe.
If you can open the entrance guarded by the standing statue, you will be drawn into the underground ruins.
" meaning there's probably smaller dungeons around the open world.

The abilities page is mostly stuff we already know but there is this. "High-performance vehicle from another planet VI-O-LA - Cruise across the vast Sol Valley and unleash its power in battle against enemies. A special suit is required to pilot it." Apparently the "beyond" suit is mainly for the bike? Weird. We're also told the purpose of the green crystals: "By placing the “Green Crystals” scattered across the planet on the altar, you can inherit the history of the Ramon tribe stored within the “Sacred Tree,” a giant tree towering over Fury Green." - Apparently they're just used to buy stuff, whether it's lore or optional upgrades.

How you guys feeling about Beyond, if you've been playing it? On the fence about buying it myself.

From what I've seen so far, I feel like I'll honestly enjoy the game (granted, I've only seen like the first hour of the game from Oatsngoats lol). Game looks absolutely stunning, and even on Switch 1, it looks beautiful. Easily the best looking game on both consoles, and it has perfect performance according to several players' testimonies

Unfortunately, it seems that my fears of the Federation troops did somewhat come true, but I've also seen mixed opinions on them; some find them annoying, others find them charming and welcome them.

Does it run well on the Switch 1? I really want the game, but don't have the money for a Switch 2.

According to people who have played the Switch 1 version, the game runs incredibly well. I'm not sure if it'll be a consistent 60fps the whole game, maybe there'll be some frame drops here and there, but if Prime Remastered is anything to go by, then Prime 4 will probably run the same, if not better.

Based on what I played so far, it's phenomenal. That's all I can say this far. The Metacritic scores giving it 6/10 mainly are repeats of IGN's Logan Plant saying "I really suck at this game, so this stops me from rating it anything higher than a 5." Also, I especially like the bike sections.

I don't have much issue with 60fps not being consistent. I was worried the game would have load times, get stuck or things like that in the Switch 1. If it's comfy to play I'm good.

Holy hell is this grating. Is the same nonsense that happened with Silksong? Some people talk as if games didn't have the right to challenge you and if they don't give you every little comfort possible like a mobile game it's poorly designed. Silksong is jarring because it's actually easier than the original Hollow Knight, but the same guys who insist the original is flawless now argue that Silksong is poorly made.

I'm not too far into the game yet, got about 6 hours in, but so far I'm finding it to mostly be a pretty good time. If I had to rate it I'd give it an 8-ish outta 10, not on par with the OG trilogy so far but given the games incredibly messy development cycle I wasn't expecting it to be. Don't know if this is a major spoiler given they showed it off in the trailer but I'll spoiler tag just to be safe.

The big open desert area ******* sucks, and not just from a gameplay standard but visually it's also noticably worse than the rest of the game which is otherwise a joy to the eyes. It's like they had a single intern work on it for like a month and just slapped it into the game, it feels really out of place. The novelty of riding across it on the bike wears off really quickly.

Prime is easily my top pick for worst functional game of all time, but that’s just me. I am just curious on if sylus’ black hole counts as a real black hole or not and if it can be used for ap (I assume no due to lack of spaghettification)

Started the game last night and got to Volt Forge. It's pretty good, though I think it's too early for me to compare it to the rest of the trilogy. One thing that bugs me is that some areas are super detailed, yet others have barely anything to look at. Like, a lot of GF rooms in the first area looked so bare bones compared to, say, Olympus and Norien in Prime 3. Same with the Viola starion in the desert. Fury Green was great, though.

It's not a super long game, it's the same length as just about any other Metroid title in terms of "How Long to Beat." Which some may see as a disappointment given how big BotW/TotK were compared to their predecessors or Odyssey being big compared to previous 3D Mario games. And it's more over, surprisingly short for a game that took so long to make. But there is a positive side, it means it doesn't take as long to get to the ending, easier to find new ability additions, ect. Plus, higher difficulty ratings and gallery stuff add replay value; there are also rumored patch updates for a Dread Mode difficulty setting being added among other things.

Damn; the short length is disappointing to hear. Then again, I was kind of expecting it when I played for a few hours last night, looked at my logbook and saw that I already had 25% filled. It's a shame that it's apparently hard to make a long Metroidvania.

Metroid games have always been short, though, just a couple of hours long. You always can beat them in under 2 hours after you get the grasp of what you're doing. The first playthroughs take time because of all the exploring, looking around and trial and error, imo.

You even get rewards for completing them fast.

Forgot to ask, we usually have a "Wait before spoiling" policy for new releases. And it's especially longer video games is where we have it up to like 2 or 3 months or so. But given MP4's length, I feel as if no need for it being any longer than a month and more like 2-3 weeks roughly is when we may discuss spoilers uncensored.

And here's some more positive news, Metroid Prime 4 is the first time Metroid in general just got really popular in Japan. It's always been pretty niche there but more popularish overseas, but it's not just popular but "On fire" in Japan.

More reason why West <<<<<<< Japan lel, I searched Prime 4 on yt and the first thing that came out was "this game is a generation failure" or something

Finished the game, gonna need time to think about my overall thoughts but for now I think it was a 7/10. It's good but you can tell those 8 years of development hell led to some really baffling and bad decisions, while I liked it overall I can easily see why some might just outright not like it at all.

I don't know if I'll get it, it looks okay but there's clearly issues and I'm not sure I wanna shell out full price for a game like that. I'd like to have a more informed opinion on it if nothing else so maybe I'll get it for Christmas. On the writing/story side at least it seems very disappointing.

I'll have to save a bit more before I can get it myself and get a proper opinion. Just glad it runs well on the Switch I have no way of getting a Switch 2 for a good while.

And for frigs sake I can't look at your profile peek without brainrot setting in.

I play the Switch 2 version; should mention, thought it would be a BOTW/TOTK situation where owning Switch 1 version and a NSO+Expansion offers free upgrades, but nope. It costs 10 dollars to upgrade Switch 1 version even with the account.

My views are definitely more positive than that so far, it actually is my personal favorite Prime series game. But not the biggest Prime fan compared to the 2D/2.5D titles, but I still see the trilogy as great games.

Let me guess, you're deeply afraid of the possibility of Tier 1 and Immeasurable speed upgrades?

So far I'm liking it more than Prime 3, and if it continues to be good and sticks the landing, I think it'll be second to prime 1 for me. Giant Bomb is right; the atmosphere is the best it's been in the series for a long time. The troopers' presence doesn't really get in the way of that, though I know others would disagree.

Kind of weird, huh. I hope it's not a thing moving forward but I guess we're not likely to get that many more Switch 1 games to begin with.

You'd need to have a story where things happen for that to be the case, so I'm not too concerned.

There's actually some potentially saucy stuff I've seen already, plus some unrelated things I've been meaning to add for a while. I don't think I'll be able to index new keys for it though, it's annoying to do that if I don't have the game and if I do eventually get it I'd like to leave at least some parts unspoiled.

Think I'll make a longer post on Prime 4 but my thoughts can be summed up as:

Great Advantage game. Weak Metroid game.

Also really dislike the story and no amount of Sylux
hopping across the multiverse or whatever le **** was that ending fight
will fix it.

The article is roughly translated via DeepL via OP's words, and those who can read Japanese could perhaps provide better translations looking at the Raws, but it is chronologically after Super but before Fusion. My rough guess is between Other M and Samus & Joey, but the existence of a multiverse will open a lot of doors. As in, it may be linear from Samus Aran's perspective, but they can just keep making more games down the line. And there could be cases of where she travels to distant past or futures.
