My Hero Academia General Discussion Thread #18

Holy ******* Cow this episode was the best MHA has ever looked and that's in competition with the movies. The colors, the movement, the composition. Also Bakugo is FAST. Like AFO flies at full speed for a hot minute and gets instantly blitzed by Bakugo who was on the building with All Might. And in another one, the raindrops freeze to show the speed of explosions.

The Go Beyond movement is epic and the animation isn't just for the Bakugo scenes, Shigaraki looks amazing and so does Deku. At the start a lot of added scenes of people from other countries.

And the next ep preview looks great too. It's going to be AFO's backstory and it looks good. Like there is a shot of young afo kill people in a neon lighted street and it is cool as hell.

Just out of pettiness, I will clip every OPM season 1 animators work to appear in this season and post on OPM threads.

This Episode gave me levels of goosebumps i never thought i’d experience

“I’m Kachaan Bakugo” was so exhilarating 😭
me and my sis out here screaming our lungs out

Before I say anything. The episode was straight 9 out of 10. I never give tens because there is always room for improvement. One of the best episodes of the entire series. Practically everyone about this episode was on point. Nothing took me out of the experience.

They showed Shiketsu High School. Only a brief moment, but we see the school. It looks really similar to U.A., but it's black in color. Actually, it does show up in the manga. For some reason, I thought that was U.A., despite the fact the U.A. building is in the coffin in the sky. Guess I'm just stupid.

Also, they made it clear Bakugo was blitzing AFO, like by a lot. AFO had a massive head start and Bakugo caught up to him like it was nothing. God, they make Bakugo's explosions look amazing. I love that they did the freeze frame with the rain drops when he disappears. It shows the explosions happening are delayed compared to his movements. By the time you see the blast, Bakugo has already moved out of the screen.

They also changed up the intro to add Bakugo, as people expected. Season 8 is already proving to be the best season at this pace.

Now, what I'm talking about next is just a minor thing I noticed when rewatching the episode slowly. It doesn't change the overall quality of the episode to me.

The second is that they added a scene showing Bakugo's explosion from Lady Nagant's perspective, which is weird. Last season and this season show that the Coffin in the Sky isn't visible to us when we see Lady Nagant. We also don't see Izuku fighting Tomura, which has that big tornado that towers over all the buildings.

Her being able to see Bakugo's blast is weird. Assuming the distance of 200 km, that'd make Bakugo's blast have a diameter of around 100 km. Which is obviously not the case. Also, her perspective of the explosion makes it look really close. It's behind the buildings, but in front of the mountains.

This directly contradicts the manga. We don't see her POV, but we do see in front of Lady Nagant. You can see the mountains and the ocean in the distance. Bakugo's explosion already happened at the end of last chapter. This isn't a flashback because we don't see any black borders. Lady Nagant clearly isn't seeing his explosion.

In case you're wondering, yes, that scan is showing Lady Nagant from her back. Which means we're looking in the same direction as her.

We get a clear shot earlier in the arc.

We get the same shot in the anime as well, but without that light. The Coffin in the Sky is not visible to us there.

It's not even possible for Lady Nagant to get from Central Hospital to Hamamatsu in her condition.

Lady Nagant was still in Central Hospital after Kurogiri was activated.

Kurogiri was activated by Chapter 374 and was shown at the Coffin in the Sky in that same chapter.

Chapter 377 picks up right where that scene leaves off.

Shigaraki gains his Quirks back seconds after Kurogiri arrives and he destroys the barrier around the Coffin in the Sky. Lady Nagant is still at the hospital at this point.

Lady Nagant shoots at Tomura in Chapter 378. The Coffin in the Sky entered free fall when Tomura blew its systems apart. Gentle caught it in Chapter 378, and Lady Nagant shot Tomura just seconds after that moment. There's no way you can tell me this entire event took more than five minutes.

Obviously, Lady Nagant cannot travel over 200 km in her injured state. She can barely stand. Shooting two times wrecked her body, and her final shot knocked her out for a bit. There are no heroes available that are capable of high speed transportation. Rock Lock is with her, but he can't travel her hundreds of km away. She likely only had enough time to Air Walk up to a taller building near Central Hospital, still inside the same city.

Yeah, no, the anime is drunk. If Lady Nagant could see Bakugo's explosion, it'd look a lot bigger than this, which is when All Might sees it. In case anyone is curious, the results of the explosion would've been 12 Gigatons of TNT, which is Island level. Would've been a nice feat if the visuals didn't completely contradict each other and canon.

Once again. The episode was lovely, I'm just nitpicking over a small moment that means nothing. I thought maybe it'd be a good feat for a second, but realized the size was impossible rather quickly. It doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the episode at all, but I always go on tangents like this and I have to let it out. Honestly, I might be amped up and hyped from watching the episode. I find it difficult to sit still.

Mirko was hit by the space warp quirk because she wasn't in the capacity of dodging; she was in the middle of attacking another High End which let the Helmet High End hit her with the attack. The moment she targeted Helmet, she immediately caught him, dodged a point blank attack from him and then killed him.
Making them literally completely still doesn't seem to be necessary, just slow or momentarily stationary would be enough, or catching them off guard.

AFO's mind games has lots of purposes and effects, they're not mutually exclusive.

The range and effect of the space warp quirk isn't always large, as seen with Mirko.

In any case, you are free to think of other Quirks who may have possibly caused All Might his injury aside from space warp since at the end of the day, we don't really know what it actually is. Just consider that it became the prevailing logical conclusion at this time due to the notion that the details we know of frames All For One to not have the power to seriously harm All Might in a conventional or straightforward manner.

I am wondering if we can get anything from that raindrop feat. It would specially great to have a high travel speed feat
Do we see actual movement during the raindrop freeze? There needs to be a movement while the movement (or lack thereof) of raindrops can be used as a point of reference.

Well from what I saw, the rain drops stay frozen and the explosion then scattered them.

I guess we can use the point of explosion to the closest rain drop to a radius of the shockwave and then do the speed. I will have to watch it frame by frame.

Although I won't do the calc. I am still pissed about my Dandadan calc still not being evaluated

The greatest MHA episode in the whole series ngl. Animation, voice acting, the content, everything was damn near perfection.

And it looks like the high quality animation is continuing into AFO vs Bakugo. Next episode is likely ending right before AFO goes baby mode on the final explosion hit, so it’s going to be a visual masterpiece when Bakugo does his beat down.

Damn I love that they’re giving this season the attention it deserves.

Alright I checked the raindrop scene and it's actually pretty insane.

1. Bakugo goes out of frame in 1 frame. One frame he is here, the other he is not on screen.

2. The light/plasma of his explosion is still in the air in the exact same position after Bakugo is gone until it fades frame by frame in 16 frames and the scene gets darker in 5 frames.

3. The rain drops stop 5 frames after Bakugo is gone but they start slowing down after the frame he is gone and are completely stopped. No movement at all.

4. The first explosion happens for 12 frames after which there are no drops on screen so they got dissipated in those 12 frames. They get engulfed in 3 frames while still being stationary.

5. New drops come down and are blown away by the second blast (they even animated it curving and stuff)

Do what you will with this information. If any genius here sees a potential calc, go for it.

it does
blitzing gojo before he can do anything
Now say this in the JJK discussion and proceed to get jumped by like 50 people for trying to arg

Meta explanation is that Horikoshi forgot Nagants distance. I don't think he ever intended her to be able to snipe people 200km away.

how does one even calculate that? I guess somewhere in the lines of this? Either way, this would probably be a good supporting feat, and could replace Lady Nagant's bullet speed calc if the anime ends up as canon and the calc gets removed.

Unless I’m reading it wrong, the calc on Deku’s profile does seem to assume the storm has reached America while the anime screenshot people are using to debunk it clearly shows the storm is still over Japan and partway across the sea.

Unless I’ve missed something, blitzting still doesn’t work on Gojo?
yes and no.
Blitzing Gojo while infinity is active? Ineffective. Blitzing Gojo in moments where he's when without his cursed technique (I.E, when he pops inevitably pops Domain due to Shiggy's speed and durablity, Which likely misses due to Shiggy's speed amps, dangersense, and being insanely faster) like when his domain broke for the first time? That boy turns to dust

Yesterday's episode was incredible, they managed to hype the moment much more than in the manga.

But I have to ask, the fact that they show in the anime that Nagant's distance was so much closer to Deku, shouldn't that disprove the bullet calc?

No, that anime scene just doesn’t make sense period. It’s why I never take anime’s as canon no matter what, they are adaptations made by many people who will straight up make new information that contradicts everything.

Deku would’ve had to throw Bakugo in the complete opposite direction of AFO and All Might for Nagant to even be remotely nearby to see that explosion, which makes no sense unless AFO and All Might’s fignt somehow took them AROUND UA and towards the central hospital, or Nagant in a crippled condition somehow managed to move on foot past UA and where AFO and All Might was.

Even with Air Walk she isn’t walking that distance in that state in any sort of sensible time.

The Nagant thing is what I have warned in the past about fans being hasty in treating the final season as canon with the hopes that an animator would contextualize or recontextualize a manga feat into something quantifiably impressive, when we very well might get something to the contrary.
