How can you survive soul disabling?

An (imaginary) character can corrupt souls of conscious beings, disabling them permanently and leaving their bodies in a living but dormant state. What trait(s) does another character need to have to resist such an attack, and would this character be able to affect type 4/5/8/9 immortal beings?

Edit: with resist I mean tank, not e.g. using mind control to prevent that character from using his powers
