Warhammer 40k: Possible Primarch Speed Upgrade

So after recently rediscovering this feat, I thought it might be worth mentioning. In the novel Deus Encarmine, a member of the Blood Angels picks up the Spear of Telesto, which suddenly imbues the marine with some of Sanguinus' power. This is what it does to him.

"Arkio could see the passage of bolts and laser blasts as if they were suspended in the air. He was invincible. By the lords, he was godlike! Arkio counted the Word Bearers in an eye-blink."

It's important to note that those lasers he views as frozen (along with everything else) are indeed real light, as they would be produced by some of 40k's "las weaponry".

"Laser Weapons, or Las Weapons as they are known in the Imperium of Man, are a family of directed energy weapons that produce beams of high-intensity amplified light to produce heat damage on a target. Laser Weapons are relatively easy to produce and maintain. No solid ammunition is ever used -- only power cells which can be recharged and quickly swapped with a fully-charged power cell."

This is not the only mention of the Primarch's being absurdly fast compared to everything else around them. For an example, while not quite as impressive, Magnus' psychic powers could allow him to move so fast, that he perceives lightning as frozen.

"Magnus set foot on the causeway, and the normal tempo of time's passage slowed, each raindrop falling as though in slow motion, the zigzagging traceries of lightning moving with infinite slowness."

Now I don't know exactly what speed these would qualify as, but I know The Shrike received a MFTL+ rating for something similar, if that is indeed accurate. If this the case, it would upgrade the reaction speeds of the Primarchs and everyone who scales to them to MFTL+.

So they basically see light in slow motion, don't know what that requires but it's definitely FTL at least i think.

@Matt

The Primarchs don't have many super direct speed feats to my knowledge, though off the top of my head, there's the Magnus one I put in the OP, Angron super casually blitzing characters who can run through scenarios in their heads and react in under a nanosecond, and I believe there are a few instances of Primarchs reflecting or dodging las fire I'll need to find.

Cool. Would that mean we should change Shrike's low-end, then? Because I initially gave the Primarch's FTL+ mostly due to being incredibly faster than characters who could react at FTL speeds.

@Azzy

Afaic, the Shrike is rated as MFTL+ not for that. But because Fedhman, a guy who saw light as frozen in time-space, referred to Shrike as being to him (Fedhman), just like how Fedhman was to a normal human.

If those beams of light are being viewed at a standstill, this definitely warrants a MFTL+ rating.
Is it possible to calc something like this? Like the minimum speed required to view a laser at a standstill?

I know this has nothing to do with the conversation at hand, but...

I kinda wanna make profile for the Eldar Gods. Can their Warp Forms scale to Khaine? I would logically assume that they would, since they are a family and all.

@Matt

All Eldar Gods scale to Khaine, as they resided on the same level of existence, though Khaine was the most powerful, being the only one actually capable of matching Slaanesh without being devoured.

Ynnead would be stronger than Khaine, as it is said that once it is roused from its slumber, it will destroy Slaanesh permanently, but it doesn't technically exist yet, and more major gods like Ynnead, Cegorach, and Isha could probably have their own pages, while ones like Asuryan, Vaul, etc. would have a group page on which Khaine and the others are mentioned, though that's just my idea.

Depends on what the definition of standstill here is. Were there any time manipulation involved on the Primarchs' part?

Magnus' passage in regards to lightning moving infinitely slowly interests me however.

Not that I recall. Arkio simply picked up the Spear of Telesto and was imbued with some of its power, which made him feel "invincible" in comparison to everything else, which was moving so slowly to him it was at a standstill.

"At least FTL+, likely much higher"

How about this setting for their speed? This is because we are not allowed to grant much higher speed ratings just because he/she blitzes slower characters without impunity (character cannot be MFTL+ for blitzing FTL characters).

Still, if those lasers are being viewed at a borderline standstill, what would the Primarchs be doing? Moving around?
Considering Arkio can kill his enemies while they're still "frozen", presumably.

Well, if those lasers are viewed as completely frozen, can't you just assume that those lasers only move 1 cm while the Primarchs move normally?

  • Primarch reaction speed = (1m)/(0.01m/(300000000m/s))
  • Primarch reaction speed = 3e10 m/s, or 100 C
This is assuming that the Primarch can only move 1m/s while the laser moves at 0.01m/s. It could probably be faster.

Just trying to revive a dead thread.

I am okay with Massively FTL Primarchs, at the least. Perhaps it would be preferable if you can find quotes about the Primarchs seeing those lasers at a standstill however, so they can be added onto the Primarchs' profiles.

The quote(s) are in the OP.

How good is Primarch vision? In terms of acuteness, not speed.

In good lightning a human can see up to 1/60th a degree at 0.7 m. Assuming he could view those lasers as if they were "that close" or if he was genuinely physically that close to them we could peg this as the lasers moving 1/60th degree/sec in a circle with a 4.4 m circumference.

This would be the equivalent of viewing a laser as moving 0.0002 m/s, so basically 1.5 trillion x faster than real-time. Even if he could only move 1 m/s in this level of time dilation that'd still make him about 5000c.

I'd like more input though.

@Xcano

Not sure about the Primarchs themselves, as I'd have to recheck, but this is technically only a normal Blood Angel wielding a portion of Sanguinius' power. Though for perception, he seemed capable of perfectly seeing and analyzing all combatants and mid-air shots as they were frozen in place.

Considering that humans are generally able to move much faster in comparison to objects that we see are frozen in place...

Ex: We see caterpillars as almost frozen in place due to their speeds being much slower compared to our own, meaning we should be much faster than those caterpillars in general.

It seems that the Primarch's perception speed would translate to theor movement speed as well...

In any case, we can write the description for the Primarch's speed similar to how it is written for the Shrike.

Maybe we can see the text regarding the feat in question [the complete text] to see if there was time manipulation involved or not?

For the Arkio one, that's the full context after being imbued with the spear's power. That happens and then he kills his foes.

I can try and dig up the rest of the Magnus page, though.

"Be silent!" thundered Magnus, and the world stilled. All sound died as the wind ceased its moaning and salt crystals hung motionless on the hardpan. "You are nothing to me, Amlodhi Skarssen Skarssensson. I can kill you where you stand, before you or any of your savage brethren could lift a hand to stop me. I can smash your ships to debris with a thought. Know this and choose your next words carefully."

Ahriman saw that Skarssen was not a warrior without courage, his aura instinctively rebelling at the challenge in Magnus' words, but nor was he without the wit to understand that he was a mote in the face of the primarch's power. He looked to his left and right, seeing the world frozen around him, every banner hanging motionless and every observer save the Thousand Sons like statues lining a triumphal roadway.

Skarssen lifted his head to expose the corded muscles of his thick neck, and Ahriman recognised the symbolism of the gesture.

Magnus nodded and the world snapped back into its natural rhythms. The wind blew once more and the silk banners flapped in the haze of dancing salt crystals.

Magnus set foot on the causeway, and the normal tempo of time's passage slowed, each raindrop falling as though in slow motion, the zigzagging traceries of lightning moving with infinite slowness. The volcanic stone of the causeway rippled with transformative energies beneath Magnus' feet, and Ahriman dropped to his knees before his primarch, centuries of ingrained obedience making the motion unconscious.

The Primarch of the Thousand Sons was a divine, rapturous figure of light amid the darkness. The gold of his armour had never been brighter, the red of his vast mane never more vivid. His flesh burned with the touch of immense power, greater than anything it had ever contained before. His eye locked onto Ahriman, and the depths of despair he saw in that haunted, glowing orb froze the blood in his veins. In that moment, Ahriman felt the horror Magnus had felt as his sons mutated into monsters and the anguish, centuries later, as he watched them butchered to serve a brother's lunatic ambition.

He understood the noble ideal that had stayed the primarch's hand throughout the battle, recognising it for what it was, not for what he had thought it to be. He felt his father's forgiveness for doubting him, and heard his voice in his head.

"This doom was always meant for me, not you," said Magnus, and Ahriman knew that every warrior of the Thousand Sons was hearing the same thing. "You are my sons, and I have failed you."

Ahriman wanted to weep at his primarch's words, feeling the sorrow of a being who had beheld all of creation, but had fallen short in his reach to grasp it. When Magnus spoke again, he alone heard the primarch's voice.

"Ahzek, lead my sons within the pyramid."

"No!" he cried, tears of grief mingling with the rain falling in endless torrents.

"You must," insisted Magnus, lifting his red arm and pointing towards the bronze gates of the pyramid, which now swung open. White light shone enticingly from within. "Amon awaits you, and he bears a priceless gift you must bear away from this place. You must do this, or all we have done here will have meant nothing."

"What of you, my lord?" asked Ahriman. "What will you do?"

"What I must," said Magnus, looking over at the raging form of Leman Russ as he charged with a glacial lack of speed onto the causeway. The primarch reached down and touched the jade scarab in the centre of Ahriman's breast-plate. The crystal shone with a pale light, and Ahriman felt the immense power resting within it.

"This was cut from the Reflecting Caves," said Magnus. "Every warrior of my Legion bears one set in his armour. When the moment comes, and you will know it when it does, concentrate all your energies on the this crystal and those of your battle-brothers."

"I don't understand," pleaded Ahriman. "What must I do?"

"What you have been destined to do since before you were born," said Magnus. "Now go!"

"I will stand with you," vowed Ahriman.

"No," said Magnus with an endless abyss of regret. "You will not. Our fates are unravelling even now, and what happens here has to happen. Do this last thing for me, Ahzek."

Though it broke his heart, Ahriman nodded, and the world swelled around him as the flow of time restored its integrity from the distortion Magnus' arrival had caused. The bellows of burning pyres and immaterial thunder rolled across the face of the world once more, and the deafening fire of weapons roared even louder than before.

What I found from someone posting. Two different passages but from what I can tell they seem to be from the same book.
