John Taylor vs Gerard Tarrant

Alright, so this is SBA range?

That means the main question is, can Gerald locate John from 4km before the latter finds him and haxes him into the ground in some absolutely horrific manner?

Yeah. He'd just Work a Finding or a Divining. He might not even need to though, as he would just see the Fae and what they're saying about the world around him.

Given the 1-B bit, he can't block the finding gift but he might also Work a simalcrum from some poor person in New York so that when John looks to find him, he finds "Gerald Tarrant" but not the right Gerald Tarrant. And it's entirely in character for him to do something like that seeing as most enemies he faces have their own forms of clairvoyance and methods to find him

John can see through illusions and "camouflage magics" in his setting using his gift, quite easily, so that would probably fail. If anything, that would just give him a direct line of sight to where the real Gerald is, because magic abilities (and supernatural powers in general) always leave a trail that just about anyone notable in his setting can pick up on, much less him.

It's also possible he could steal that and wrap that around himself, since he's done so to magic enchantments and defenses in the past. But I doubt he'd try it when he can just locate Gerald without bullshitting around.

Simalcrum isn't just illusions or camouflage, it's basically rewriting a person's existence down to their soul. There's an explicit difference made between simply creating illusions and making simulacrum. Working also leaves trails, and Gerald is quite capable of hiding his, but ... 1-B finding powers. At the same time though he could likely sense John using his powers, and he's equally skilled at finding trails that other people have tried to hide.

So it's probably not really something John should try to steal and wrap around himself unless he wants to overwrite his existence and turn into a Gerald copy.

>rewriting a person's existence down to their soul

If that's the case, he'd definitely avoid trying to steal it, since he's had experience dealing with an outbreak that did the exact same thing. (The "Springheel Jack meme", which broke out in the Nightside and rewrote everyone it touched into Springheel Jack clones)

And he would still be able to find the real Gerald Tarrant through the trail left behind by the magic. Assuming his gift didn't just show him where the real one was from the beginning. (I'd have to reread John's feats again before I could say whether or not it would do that) Hell, one of the things he did describes his gift catching a "scent" left by his enemies from a possible future, after they sent a bunch of constructs to try and kill him for the umpteenth time.

EDIT: Said enemies also exist in the present-day Nightside, and John's gift still sent his Sight to the future rather than showing him all of said enemies as they were in the present.

So, from what I gather, if Gerald tries to set up some sort of countermeasure for John's gift, he's more or less wasting his time. John's gift is likely to look past those measures, and could pick up on the trail left by his magic even if those countermeasures manage to fool it briefly.

If Gerald can focus on trying to find John instead of trying to hide himself, he'll have a chance at an incon. But if he spends the first few moments trying to avoid being found, he's probably dead.

I just remembered that Gerald can only manipulate the fae if he can see it. So placing him 4km away from John somewhere in New York / Central Park means he can't even use any of his powers on John.

Now it's a matter of who hits first and with what...

Voting incon, unless some other detail comes up.

Incon because Gerald probably flash freezes at the same time John does... whatever his go to attack is.

[after failing to find wherever the current Voting thread went]

Well...****.

Thank you,

Now let's bring this thing home before it dies already.

A lot of things, tbh.

He's done everything from literally strike something (read: an Outsider) with its death to taking away someone's ability to appear anywhere in reality. He killed a bunch of Neanderthal bikers with probability manipulation, killed some combat magicians by forcing all of their magic artifacts to discharge all their magic energy at once, blew up a living car just by "hurling" all his anger and frustration at it, teleported toilet water into some poor guy's lungs...

Listing how many "ways John kills somebody" is a lot like listing how many people your average prostitute has slept with in her career. You're going to lose count eventually.

Tfw two characters are so little-known that you can't even get some FRAs for them...

Oof

I sense that will be the same with Dresden soon.

Unless I get everyone in the EWTRTW thread interested in Dresden ...
