Transformation is given when a character has limited changes, such as werewolves only being able to change into either their wolf or human self, it is considered limited Shapeshifting.

Shapeshifting is when users can make changes freely and have more variety in their transformation abilities.

Assuming is not aesthetic, is just Shape-shifting, although the difference between Shapeshifting and Transformation may be thin (last one generally involve stats amplification).

For reference, see Garfiel. Being only able to transform body parts or himself into a tiger means he gets Transformation because the function is limited.

Meanwhile Beast Boy can change into any animal he is familiar with and has used multiple at once, giving him Shapeshifting instead.
